Annie Oakley
« on: March 03, 2005, 06:35:42 PM »
OK you history buffs, here's a question for you (actually a couple of questions).  My daughter (grade 6) had to pick a "hero" to do a bio on for one of her classes and she decided to do "Annie Oakley".  Now, there is a ton of info on the web about Annie's humble beginnings, life and deeds but she's also curious about some of the finer details.

So can any of you fine folks tell her (a) what type of firearms she used in her shows (my girl is an up & coming shooter/hunter and has a bit of an interest in firearms) and (b) what type of dog was "Dave".

She did send the museum in Darke County an email with the same questions but has yet to hear back from them.

Any help appreciated.

The Rifle she used was a .22 Marlin leveraction. A few years ago there was an ad that was used by Marlin that showed Annie stand there holding a rifle. I believe in the ad there was something about the Marlin M39 was the gun  that had been in continuous production longer than any other. If there is time before the paper is due ou might contact Marlin and see if you can get a copy of the ad.

Tuffcity,
The American Rifleman had a real good article about Annie and her guns just a short time ago.  I don't know how you might access those issues, but you might try going to NRA .org to find out.

I believe She used a whole passel of different guns other than 22 cals.
I Believe she used a couple of 32-20's and a couple of different shotguns.
I have read where bird shot was used as well as wax of some kind and real lead which depended on the show location for awhile and after a few problems with damage to buildings from lead stayed with the wax and birdshot.
The museam is in Greenville Ohio ( Darke county ) and is about a 45 min drive from Dayton Ohio. They also have Annie Oakley days there every summer at the fir grounds if you are anywhere near there.

Not everyone knows that despite the fact that her trick shooting in the wild west shows was done with a rifle, her real fame came shooting trap and skeet.  The other interesting fact is that she came out of retirement to train marksmen when the US went to war.

Question:  Who is buried in Annie Oakley's grave?

Answer:  Nobody!

Although the grave site has what appears to be two graves with headstones, Annie's remains were cremated and her ashes are in her husband's casket with him.  This is sort of typical of Annie.  Doing things the way she wanted but not wanting to offend anyone by what at the time would have been considered outrageous by many.

I seem to remember that Shotgun Sports magazine had an article on Annie a while back.  Might try their website.  There also was a good documentary on PBS some time ago, maybe a year?

When I was in school, we had an Ann Oakley in my class.  Not the same one of course.  I'm not that old.

Annie and her husband had a house in Nutley NJ while she traveled with the wild west show.
I think I found it - it is near a place called the "Mud hole in Nutley - Cool Place.

I think her dog was a terrier, maybe a Jack Russel or rat terrier.
