BULLET SEATING DEPTH
« on: February 12, 2005, 03:15:41 AM »
Normally when I seat bullets for my rifles I seat a right before they make contact with the rifling. Has anyone found this to make a differance when loading for their handi's? I did notice when shooting factory ammo federal seems to seat the 100 gr sierra boat tails fairly deep it shot like crap in my gun  :(

What size hole in the rifle we talking about here?  Most of them have such a long throat you cannot touch the rifeling and keep the bullet in the case.

Kenscot, I try for bullet dia for depth. 243 is almost 1/4 in.
That's what I go for. Unless they have channel lure, like 30-30
bullets  then I seat to it.  Marv.

My 223 Was like that (sold it).  And I'm a proponent of keeping the bullet just off the lands too, but it seemed to me that with the long throat it was better to go with the mininum of a caliber in the case neck.  The ammo that shot best was loaded that way.

My 30-30 (1995 vintage) does not have the long throat and typically if loaded to just touch the lands the rounds come out to about SAMMI length.  It shoots pretty good too!  Do you guys at NEF hear me???
