1858 Remmies and deer hunting

I know that for distances, cap and ball revolvers shouldn't be used for deer hunting.  What if the deer was within 10 yards or even 10 feet and closer?  I shoot my 1858 Remmies with 30 grains of powder, the maximum the book suggested.  

I was hunting on my father's land this past weekend.  While I was sitting in my chair on the ground, this nice size doe decides to come and check me out.  I thought she was going to get fresh with me.  I could have clubed her over the head easily.  She was walking all around me.  If I had a handgun instead of a 7mm Rem. Mag., I would have taken her.  My only handguns are two 1858 Remmies and an 1851 Colt.  I was not expecting a deer that close.  The usual path they have is about 200yds. from my little ground blind.

RdavidP, The book says 30g because they are always going to keep the loads low to help protect them in lawsuits. Yoy can load the 1858 Reming as high as you can and I have never had a problem with it at all. In fact it shoots great!
As for dropping deer I recommend 38-40 g of fffg Goex , a wad on top and a 454 ball. When you put the powder in a the wad on top it doesnt look like a ball will fit at all! But it does and very nicely. Just copress the ball down on the wad as hard enough to seat it below the mouth of the chamber. Then I like to smear a little grease over the ball with a pop cicle stick. It goes BOOOOM!!! and it's very accurate. No problem droping deer at 20-25 yards and even wild bore. Mike
