Question on recoil man Im full of em (questions)
« on: February 13, 2005, 09:57:01 AM »
Hey all :D  I have a question and I know alot depends on me but Id like some opinions. I broke my right shoulder last year and because of some other health problems they wont do the surgery needed to correct the break so I am recoil sensitive. abou the max recoil I can handle is a 30.06 bolt action shooting 150gr core lokts. I really wanted to get a 45-70 but I know the recoil would make me cringe and I wouldnt want to fire it again so my question is what are some of the bigger caliburs I could shoot with out going over the recoil of a 30.06. I am really interested in the 500sw that is now coming out in the handi, I guess if I had to I could put a brake on one but that sure makes em loud. While Im at it where can I find a decent priced 220 swift rifle? Thanks Jimmy

That's one of the nice things about the 45-70, you can buy factory or handload it to what ever level you're comfortable with. The trapdoor level loads from remington 300gr CL bullets are mild in recoil and even the 405gr loads are fairly mild and compare to 30-06 recoil. Handloading can get you some very accurate loads that are also mild, 28gr of 2400 and the 350gr hornady round nose is one that I have shot in my 45-70, it shoots 2" groups at 100yds without tinkering with the load, easily. I would recommend you stick with the wood stock or even step up to the laminated stock as I have done to reduce recoil even more, specially from the bench. I also installed a Limbsaver recoil pad that makes even the heavy to max loads tolerable along with some weight in the stock bolt hole for bench work. For bench work I would also recommend wearing a PAST magnum shoulder pad for added protection for you, I wear one for heavy load work and it along with the Limbsaver make range work a breeze.

You might also consider the 38-55 target model.  Factory loads are very mild and if your shoulder is up to it the NEF can handle top loads as well.

These can push a 250gr load to 2000+ if you desire.  It's up to you.

Either that or go 44 Mag and maybe consider reaming it to 445 Super mag later on.  there is another thread of someone else doing that already..

While the factory loads for the 45-70 are about '06 level, you have really limited yourself with the lower level loads in that caliber.  It's fun to shoot but if it were me and had shoulder problems, I'd not do it.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Have you tried to shoot with the opposite shoulder? Start out with a 22 rimfire and see if you can get comfortable with it. With the Handi single shots it makes no difference whether your right or left handed. With enough practice you should be able to retrain yourself to shoot that way. :D

The 44 mag.would be a good choice to test,it has very little recoil, and it push's 300 gr. bullets at 1639 fps. through mine. Thats very close to the 45 70 300 gr. loads, with less recoil. You could ream it to 445 super mag. and get above 1800 with the 300 gr.loads. I'm getting 2128 fps. with the 240 gr.bullets with a below max loads..  Digger

Try black powder loads for your .45-70.  They don't feel as sharp.

1dahunter: Don't forget for a little extra money you might want to concider the BC barrel for the extra length and weight.   <>< Duce:

Simple solution!  Shoot left handed.  Only kidding, few people can switch like that.  Unless you are one of the 1.5% of the people that don't have a dominate eye, and are truly ambidextrous.  My recommendation get the light loads for the trapdoor 45-70, I think you could handle them.  Otherwise get a brake (I hate those things), and remember never, never, never shoot it without hearing protection.  A good friend of mine was a helicopter pilot, he went on a hunt with a friend and broke his gun.  He borrowed a gun to shoot his sheep, it had a brake.  He did not put on ear protection first, and now he can no longer fly choppers.  In other words he lost his job over it.  My neighbor bought a new .338 Ultra Mag.  First thing he did was have a brake put on it.  I took him hunting and watched him shoot a Moose without putting on his ear protection.  Now he has to wear hearing aids to join a conversation, and he only fired the gun once.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I picked up a 45- 70 some years ago because it was on sale for $185.
I called NEF, and a lady there said the recoil was "awful", so I bit and bought a Sims slip on. I barely felt my first shot, so I took the pad off and I would say that shooting 300gr factory Winchester that the kick is no more than the avg. 30-06. Anyway this gun has evolved to a terrific muzzleloader, having added the Huntsman barrel.
The original sights were very accurate on the 45-70. The 5 shots I took
were in the bull at 50yds,right out of the box. I am very interested in adding the short ultralight .243, or trading for a .243 since I don't know if I would ever use the 45 70 (have way too many deer rifles).
So guys is that ultra light .243 worth the new added expense of dealing with NEF, if not I would entertain a trade.... .243 or possibly 20 ultra.
I would include the remaining 15 rounds.
