shortening a barrel
« on: March 21, 2005, 10:33:42 AM »
i've got this 20 gauge single shot that my dad bought me about 10 years ago. anyways since i don't hunt with it anymore i thought it would make a nice camp gun but i want the barrel a little shorter. its got a 28" barrel and i was thinking 20" would be good. but where do i measure? from the breach (where the shell goes) or from where the chamber merges into the barrel? also what should i use to cut it?

A barrel is measured from the face of the breach.  18" is the minimum for a shotgun.  You will, of course, lose the choke, and the front sight.

The barrel is measured from the face of the breach to the muzzle.  18" is minimum for a shotgun.  You would, of course, lose the choke and the front sight.  I think that you would find that the difference between 20" and 28" makes the job counter-productive.

i know i would lose the choke and the bead sight but thats not a problem i know a gunsmith that will put the new bead on for preety cheap. he also does choke tubes if i wanted. why would it be counter produtive?

I only meant that a 28" bbl with a choke is better than a 20" bbl with no choke, even as a camp gun.
