Flat base vs boat tail bullets ... ?
« on: February 13, 2005, 11:57:20 AM »
I am starting to reload for my new .223 Savage FP 10 with a new Duramaxx stock and am very curious as to your opinions on the type of bullets your rifles prefer in different calibers. I am trying Sierra's 55 gr Spitzers (flat base), Nosler 55 gr ballistic tips (boat tail), and Hornady's 55 gr V-max's (flat base). I was surprised to see the .224 55 gr V-max was a flat base bullet seeing that I use the 65 gr V-max in .243 were boat tails. I guess I just assumed all the V-max bullets were boat tails.

My .243 seems to like boat tail bullets a little better using Noslers and V-max's. I also use Sierra's flat base HP in 60 gr that groups pretty decent.  What are your experiences with these type different bullets?

Not ammunition, just the boxer brass. There is no availability of Oddly enough boat tailed bullets are less accurate close in for a lot of reasons (it would take a few paragraphs for me to over explain). Flat base bullets tend to be more accurate close in (i.e. 300yds or less) boat tailed bullets will not exhibit better accuracy (i.e. flatter trajectory) until further out 300+ yds. In any event some rifles like boat tailed bullets better all the time, and some won't shoot them for poop. The difference I made mention to is all exterior ballistics, mathematical calculations, and assumes all else is perfect.
What it boils down to is, shoot what shoots best. Buy a few bullets and see what it will do. it yet.

reed1911 is right. bullets and loads are picked by your gun be it rifle or hand gun. my custom heavy barreled .243 likes 70 gr. boat tails, 75 gr.v-max flat, 80 gr boat tail and 100 gr. flat. go figure!  you just don't know till you use them.
if its worth doing, finish it!

jeepman,
You may want to try some of Sierra's lighter match bullets when you get a chance.
Best,
