45-70,44 mag,30-30

well i was goin to get the 308 for my next barel i will be using it for deer mostly. but i want to have open sights and scope. does the 45-70,44 mag,30-30 come with scope mounts also? how do these calibers do on deer what would yall chose out of these 3 for deer. pleas help.

Get the .45-70 Zach, it'll work real well on deer and just about anything else, But its really fun to watch other shooters eyes when you pull one of them big ole cartriges out and lite'em off. The .44 and .30-30 will both work well also and are alot cheaper to reload for. 8)

Zach, I have all three and have killed deer with all three. The 44 is an absolute keeper. While I doubt I will sell my 45-70, I wouldn't get it again if I could do it over. The gun shoots ok, it is just more recoil than I care to deal with and is effectively a reproduction of the 44 Mag, at least how I load and shoot it. So far the 30-30 is a mixed blessing. It shoots some jacketed bullet loads really well, but the barrel is off dimension and it won't shoot cast worth a hoot past 1200 fps. That would be OK, but I have a 357 Maximum that is a ballistic twin that shoots both cast and jacketed pretty well overall.

The bottom line in my experience is get the 44 Magnum. There are a lot of loads available for it and it makes a good plinker and hunter. The 30-30 is a good rifle too. The 45-70 will do things neither of the others will do, but how often do you need 400 grain bullets at speeds greater than 1600 fps, and how much do you really like heavy recoil?

ya i was thinkin 44 mag i dont want much meat damage recoil i dont mind and the 45-70 is expinsive also i dout if i will be even reachin 100 yards deer huntin mre like 50 or less. but i rely dont want much meat damage at all. also can i mount a scope on the 44 mag??

Scope will mount on every Handie I've ever seen, they all seem to have the same pattern of hole in them.

By the way I'm getting a .44 mag myself 8)

I'll agree with JPH;

The 44 mag. barrel is a hoot to shoot. I've put synthetic stocks on my Ultra, topped off with a 6X36 Leupold fixed power, held in place with Warne scope rings. It will shoot 300gr. Speer jacketed bullets, 265gr. RNFP-GC's. And even for a reduced load, it will shoot the Speer 44Spl. bullet, a 200gr. GDHP using a 44mag case w/ Unique for the powder.
It's the rifle I shoot most.
Try it.... You'll like it!  :grin:

i'd go with the 44 mag.  When i got mine it had the scope base and sights on it but i took the sights of and but a red dot on it. It shoots great and if your looking for a little more power after you get you can always have it reamed out to 445 supermag. Ditchdigger is getting really good results with his. But if you do do this it is strictly a reloading catridge. If you do this you can still shoot 44 mags and 44 specials in it. My 44 mag was the only thing i hunted with last year.

I have to vote for the 30-30. To me this is THE deer hunter's round. Cheap ammo compared to most other calibers. But I sure do want a 45-70 :grin:

on that third one down and that pic of all the 44s will the mag shoot all of thoes. also how would i go about reaming out the magnm and where would i get the brass for it?

I am with gwhilikerz, the 30-30 barrel is the ticket and the ammo is cheap and the defferent weight bullets you can load or buy will surpise you.. :eek:

If you had a .44 mag and wanted to ream it out wouldn't you be better to go on to the .444? I don't know the answer for sure. It's just a thought.
  If you did you would have a round that would be more available and I would think could be loaded to higher pressures due to the larger case capacity.

if you ream it to 444 marlin you will not be able to shoot the magnums and specials in it. but if you ream it to 445 supermag you will be able to.

I bought my .44 mag this past summer and I luv it. I put the NEF base on it and a 4 X 32 scope. It is very accurate out to 80-100 yards. My wife loves to shoot it, because recoil and muzzleblast scares her with larger calibers.  I've got about $350. invested in a great little gun.

I am anxious to see the 7.62 X 39 make it's appearance.

ya ive got a simions 3-9*32 deerfield. not the greatist scope in the world but i figure it will work. :grin: just got to wait until i get my b day money after march 4

Best deer rifle under 100 yards

Under 100 yards, the .45-70 is a hammer.  It's just about twice as powerful as the .30-30 or .44 Magnum.  You can load it with smokeless or black, up or down.  It's a peach to reload, and you can reload it for as little as 30 cents a round.
