Are these good entry lever reloading kits ???
« on: February 12, 2005, 06:49:58 AM »
I've been thinking about getting into reloading for a while now. I think I'm ready to start! My good friend recommended the RCBS RC Supreme Master Reloading Kit. Hes been reloading for 25 years or so. I'll start with my 223 Rem. (model 700) and my 280 Rem. (also a model 700). What do you think about these two kits. Are they good for a "new comer"? Thanks!

Go with the Rock Chucker kit, but you can find better prices.  Also get the RCBS Accessory kit.

Ten years ago I bought the Rock Chucker kit and it has served me well.  I'm planning to go to a progressive reloader soon but my experience with the RC single stage press has been a real education and I'm glad that's where I started.

New York,
I'll have to vote for the Rock Chucker kit.  You can't go wrong with the RC press...non better in my opinion.
Enjoy your new hobby.
Best,

Take a look at the Lee classic cast, Its a better press than the rock chucker for less$$$, I don't think it is in a kit yet but I don't like Lee scales anyhow, I bet if you looked around you can get what you need for less money than cabelas 8)

Check out ebay.  I saw a RCBS Jr2 press for $6.00 and it still had a day or 2 left on it.  You may be able to pick it up for $20.00.  I've got the one my Dad used and it'll load everything I've got up to and including .300 mag with no problem.  If you don't get in a hurry and do your homework, you can get a deal or 2 from ebay or the various forum classifieds.

If you have a lot of money and you are sure reloading is for you, buy the rockchucker kit. If you want to just try reloading  go for the Lee kit at 1/3 the price.

I kinda agree with the idea of a RCBS Jr press from Ebay.  I have been using one for over 40 years and haven't seen any reason to "upgrade".   And I also agree that reloading can be a black money hole if you jump into it at the top end and then find its not for you.
If you have a friend to mentor you and you have tried reloading on his equipment and feel its something that you would like and would stick with, then buy the best "stuff" you can afford.  FWIW, the Lee starter kit is a good one and what it does, it does well.  You probably won't be able to pass it on to your children but as you learn more, you can upgrade items one at a time without breaking the bank.
If you "just want to see", then I suggest you get a Lee Loader, a pound of powder, a box of primers and a box of bullets and go to it.  Only about a gazillion or so of ammo has been produced with a Lee Loader.  Bench Rest shooters still use in line reloading tools and a plastic mallet to craft their ammo while at the range.

NY Hunter,
If your not in a hurry you might want to wait for a sale price on a reloading kit.  Midway and some of the other mail order outfits run these regularly.

Turret Press

I have a single stage RCBS and a Turret Press. I like my turret press better. The turret press can be used as a single stage but has the advatage that you can mount more multiple dies on it. Sometimes while reloading you will find a small fracture (split) in the case and you have to go back and bring another case up to where you are with the others. With the turret press you don't have to remove the die you are using and later have to reinstall it and readjust it. Also during load development, you can have all the dies installed and adjusted and go back and more quickly, reload more with different powder weights.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

Midway has the Rockchucker kit on sale for $239  I've been thinking about it.   http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/646599

But, from reading some of the above posts I'm thinking of starting out cheap.  I can afford the RCBS kit, and I find it easier to learn with the right tools.   How much can I reload the equivalent of Winchester Supreme ballistic tip 168gr 30.06 loads for?  Currently paying $22/box.  I don't think deer at 40 yards will care about the black molly bullets or the shiny steel brass.  I love that ammo though.  I've seen 9 deer hit with them, some were poorly placed shots, and they all just dropped.  I like to practice with the same ammo I hunt with, and the $22/box is expensive!  I'd also like to make a bunch to give away to my brother and a couple of friends to try.

If I get that kit.  What do I need?  Primers, powder, bullets, shell holder? and a die?  I'd be shooting them out of a Remington 7400 for starters, maybe a BAR and a Savage bolt rifle soon.  -  Joe
