New Sportster 17hmr owner :)
« on: February 05, 2005, 06:08:22 PM »
I started out wanting a accurate little rifle.  I had a dozen or so guns, but no rimfires.  Got a 10/22...  Not accurate.   Got a Marlin 883ss..  Much better, but I still wasn't happy.   Got a Sportster 17hmr, and now I'm happy!   Out of the box I could make dime size 5 shot groups at 50 yards.  So far I've only used CCI/TNT ammo in it.  I had some Federal V-Shok ammo, but became so intrigued with the gun's accuracy, I forgot to try any of it.  I love this gun!  I was very surprised by it's excellent lite trigger.  It will be great if the accuracy gets even better with a few more rounds through it (only 50 so far), and different ammo.  I just ordered 2 boxes each of Hornaday 17gr, 20gr, and Remington 17gr from www.midwayusa.com to try in it.

Here's a pic of my new baby, wearing it's cheezy Ebay 6-24x50 Tasco scope.

:D , JoeLansing, you will continue to like that gun!!! I predict it will shoot dime sized holes at 100+ yards like most of the others here with the amm it ends up liking best and as long as you do your part. If you get the oppurtunity perhaps a set of rings that lower the scope a bit to where it just misses the barrel and hammer would be nice. It looks a bit high in the photo, but a sweet looking setup none the less!!! Good Luck and have fun. Just wait until the first time you vaporize a crow or nail a groundhog at 100-200 yards, you will be hooked on this caliber and gun for sure!!!....<><....

I know those rings are too high.  I stole them off of my Rem 7400 because I was so impatient.  The bad part is they are see-through rings with no iron sights on the gun, and the x-hairs aren't very straight..:)

I don't think we have any gophers here in Michigan, but I did take a big opposum last night in my garage with a powerful pellet rifle.  I'm going to go look for some extra high weaver rings locally now.

JoeL, I have a 6.5-20x50 Simmons WTC on my bull barrel .223 Handi and I use high Millet Angle Loc rings on mine and the fit is just about perfect. The rings work out great and I like them much better than the Weavers I have....<><....

Here's the WTC18 mounted on my .280 Rem w/medium Burris Signature Zee rings....th ehammer spur extension would need to be used and the scope cap would need tp be slotted, it's that low! The medium sig zees are .270" high.....

Good choice with the Sportster Joe.

My mate and I were both laughing at the accuracy of mine out of the box. These things are more than just the sum of their parts.

If you are going Weaver brand rings check out www.weaveroptics.com for the specs (i.e. heights ) of the rings. I've got high rings with a 2-7x40 Redfield and it has ~3mm clearance with the hammer. Doesn't sound like much but it's plenty.

That's where I got mine, Gander Mountain. I went in intending to buy my friend a birthday present but didn't find what I was looking for.

The Sporty followed me home instead. :-D  Mine has been modifyed already. Check out the Choate varmint stock thread in this forum.

I have the .17HMR Sportster with a Bushnell Banner 6-18x 50mm AO.  I use Leupold QRW MEDIUM rings.  Clears the barrel and hammer no problem.  You won't need the extra tall or tall rings.

Well, I got a set of Weaver extra high rings today.  Lowered it a hair, but still too high.  About 1/4-1/3 of an inch.  I'll order a set of highs and mediums just to cover all my bases.  My ring collection is getting impressive.  It seems to take me 2 or more sets till I find what I like.  Buy the gun, buy a scope, and cheezy rings fast so I can shoot it that day.  Later buy better rings for it.  Then buy some that fit right..:)   Do you guys have any magic to getting a scope level?  I've got some small bubble levels, but they only work if I can find a spot on the gun, and on the scope that are *true* level with each other and the way I hold the stock.  When I use my eyes to level one I get it right about half of the time.  Maybe I should cut out the beer as a scope mounting tool?   :toast:      I did get another 4? types of ammo for it.  I think I've got 6 now.  Another 60 rounds and the bore will be getting a little settled in and I should be able to find out what it's favorite food is.  I want to buy another hummer already..  Maybe a Savage bolt action?  I'm scared that it would be a let down after the Sporster though.  -  Joe

I use a stanley combination square, the kind with the 12" steel rule and the bubble in the frame, lay the rule against the side of the frame with the rifle in a vise or a V-notched carton. After the rifle is plumb, I look through the scope at a string hung with a weight on the bottom like a plumb bob, at the end of the hallway, it's real easy to line the vertical X-hair up with the white string.

Sorry about the wrong link above.

If you go here http://www.weaver-mounts.com/rings1.asp?qpg=detachtop.html the various heights are given and you can work out which ring you need exactly.
