I am having trouble finding the differences between these rifles. Also the Ultra's seemed to be hard to find. Where is the best place to buy one.  Finally is the ultra really worth the extra money? I would be grateful. for any imput.

Welcome Aboard  :D

Well...for me the Ultra is worth the extra money...seems the triggers are a little lighter...you get the much better laminated stock on it over the regular Handi...and a heavier  23" barrel in the Ultra over the standard conture 22" barrel in the regular Handi...Wally World would a good place to order one...unless you have a good sporting goods store in your area...would it be worth it to you...don't know...but I like them...

Good Luck with your deceision...

Welcome aboard! :D I have ta say the best place in general is Walmart for $233 on the Ultra. Ultras have resin laminated stocks compared to the plain jane hardwood stock of the Handi, the barrel is a bit more polished and will have an Ultra scope rail which has set screws in the part that hangs over the barrel past the chamber. Barrel lengths are different, also. The Ultra used to have a 26" barrel in 30-06, but the updated web site shows 23" for the Ultra and 22" for the Handi, don't know what's up with that...Is the Ulra worth the extra money?? Some would say the extra barrel length is, and the laminated stock will cost the better part of $100 to add to a handi, just depends on your preferences and pocket book..

I have an Ultra 25-06 and a standard synthetic 30-06. like both, but take the standard out much more often. Like the short barrel on the standard version better. I think you will be happy with either.

this may sound odd, but my .223 handi rifle has similar stocks to the Ultra, dont know why, they dont seem to be just a plain jane hardwood sotck they seem to be a laminate of some sort?

Hazzard:

Most of the new Handi stocks are laminated...just not of the same quality as what comes with the Ultra...they seem better sealed...and are checkerd too...

Not all the new Handis have the laminated pallet wood stocks, my .280 doesn't and neither does the new 204 ruger that just came where I buy my handis.  Seems H&R is as fickle at production as they are with info! The stock issue must be a sourcing issue. Another inconsistency is the scope rail... my 204 ruger handi has the standard rail but the new 204 handi at the store has the ultra rail on it.....go figure! :?

ok dont get me wrong i love my handi so far , but something has to change at headquarters or something i mean seems like there no organization, and some things like on my handi, the sling mount stud on the forend is way off center, i mean its no big deal for me cuz im getting Choate varmint stocks but still that kind of stuff shouldnt happen and im not bashing H&R but i think they need to pay a little more attention to there work you know what i mean?

what is the Ultra scope rail, compared to the regular or previous scope rail.  Any close-up pictures of the new style.

The Ultra rail is about an inch longer and has 3 set screws in the end over the barrel, 1 vertical that just kisses the top of the barrel to support the weight of the scope and 1 on each side to lock the vertical set screw in place.

I got the same question on .308 I ordered a regular barrel and got back what appears to be a heavy barrel... Or is the regular just heavier than the avg .308 rifle barrel on other brands?  I'm not complaining. After ging through the obligatory electric brake cleaning of the ejector channel,
whatever my .308 is, it shoots very well!
Is there a difference between the reg vs heavy barrel?
