Anyone use a 20 ga. to hunt? I'm planning on building a Flint Fowler and want to use it on turkey.

I've taken a bird with a 20ga. I used 3"magnum 4's though.

Hi i have used my wife's youth model 20ga BPS 3 inch mag 22 inch barrel with a custom choke it patterns great for a 20ga and with Fed 3 inch 6's turkey loads i have killed 3 turkeys with it is so light and little gun i am use to a Benelli or a Rem SP 10ga a 20ga will do the job a good one VM

ever single turkey i've ever killed in the fall i shot with my 2 3/4" 12 ga model 12 with a modified choke. I've never felt short on power, just shorter on range than with my 3 1/2" "turkey gun". Get close, aim at the head, you'll be fine.

I use a Mossberg® Mdl500C in 20GA; Hastings® Super Full (.570") Extended Choke Tube, & Federal® Grand Slam 1&5/16oz #6. It does the job at any reasonable range. Gun is lighter to carry & the recoil only about ½ of the big 12GA with 3" Mags.

I've use a highly modified 20 gauge NEF since 1999... there's a pic on GB Member Album with an explaination of what's been done to it...

I hope a 20ga. will do the trick..really I know it will..just have to use it within it's limitations. I just got through today with this .20ga. Old Virginia Style Flintlock that I put together especially to spring gobbler hunt with. Put a front and rear sight on the 36" octagon to round barrel. Chamber's large siler lock. Got parts from Pecatonic. Will test it out tomorrow.

MTNMAN..I got everything from Pecatonica Long Rifles and all the components ran just a little over $600..I spent a lot on tools I needed also.
Took me about 6months to finish...was my first attempt..made a lot of little mistakes..but it's mine and I'm glad I did it. Soon as spring gobbler season is over and I can scrape up some money I'm going to start on a 54cal. long rifle for deer and hogs...either same style as this one..Virginia..only instead of the 36" barrel will go with 38" swamped. Either that or an Isaac Haines w/38" barrel..probably the Virginia Style.
Here's my spring gobbler load..80grs. ff, 1 thin overshot card, 3 Wonder Wad 1000 felt wads 100grs. by volume nickle plated no. 6's, 20grs. by volume nickle plated no. 4's dumped into a glued role of post-it paper cut about 1/4" higher than the shot column. I roll the post-it paper on a pc, of wood dowel about 10thousants smaller than my bore..put one of the 3 felt wads inside and dump the shot on top..ease it down the barrel and put one thin overshot card on top. The overshot card pushes the extra paper over for a little crimp. Use fff for prime. This load does good to about 30yds. and then it gets sparse. 30yd. Pattern
