Long barrels ?
« on: February 23, 2005, 11:20:48 AM »
What do you think about the 26 inch barrels on most of the magnum rifles? I just bought a Remington CDL in 300 mag.with the 26 inch and I'll say this much, with my tall 5'7" build,it'll take some getting use to.Are the 26 inchers really needed for the magnums? What's your thoughts?May be I'm just used to my 22 inch barrel on my model 70 win.fetherweight in 30-06.Don't know.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with the magnum rounds so I can only tell you what I've heard (or what I've think I've heard  )

I think the long barrels aid in heat disspiation in the barrel (which is a result of more accuracy?) that comes with the magnum rounds. I'm sure bull barrels are avaliable, but boy, you might be able to cook an egg on em by the time you're done with a few rounds :) . Just to give you an idea of how hot a barrel can get, I shot my .243 (which is no magnum cartridge by any stretch of the imagination) with a 24" barrel. I fired 3-4 rounds right in a row. It was hot to the touch. I mean hot. You couldn't even wrap your hand around it without getting burned. And theory is once the barrel starts getting hot that gun'll start throwing rounds.

But this is only what I've heard in theory. I ain't no expert and the opinion is subject to revision. Take care.  :D

The long barrel is necessary if you want to get the extra velocity the magnum rounds offer, the slow burning powders require more barrel to get the velocity up. I would assume you are looking for more velocity by having a 300 magnum, in addition to your 30-06?? I did the same thing. While a 26 inch barrel can be a little clunky, the magnum only shines out past 300 yards in comparison to the 06, thats the nice thing about having both, you can use the shorter barreled 06 in tight situations, walking around, etc., and use the magnum for sitting in a stand for long range shots.

If you're not gonna have the longer barrel then don't waste your money or put up with the recoil when you're really gaining so little over a .30-06. But then I refuse to use magnums period regardless of barrel length.

Thanks guys,
You have made some good points concerning the longer barrel.I am finding, also, that I can really hold that baby steady in the off hand or sitting position, compared to my 22 inch -06.I might not be so dissapointed after all.Oh and Greaybeard, thanks too, cause sometimes I actually forget just how great the 30-06 really is.
