7600 comes in 30-06 and a special run in 35 Whelen that could well be sold out by the time you read this. I say get the Whelen.
If you think the 30-06 is the most versatile rifle in production, think again. The '06 has plinking/small game rounds of about 100 grains. Great. Fantastic. The Whelen can utilize 357 mag/38 special bullets of 110 grains for the same purpose. Now let's go to the other end of the spectrum. '06 tops out at 220 grains for practical field use, you can load up 250 gr. Hawks if you have a recipe and the desire. Or, you can load the Whelen with standard 250-grainers and maybe on a good day have fun rolling up some 310 gr. Woodleighs. But wait, what about something in between?? Yeah, shoot some reduced loads out of your Whelen using 60% H4895 for any bullet weight where a normal H4895 load is listed, and you have yourself a 200-yard weapon that kicks like a 308. Now THAT's versatility.
