i posted the ? about 200 yd shot. i'm gouing to try this. i have found a cva hunterbolt 209 magnum for 99.99 at midway. i need some quick info on this rifle as they only have one in stock. thanks in advance for any info.

I only own one spanish barrel rifle and I do not shoot "Magnum loads" in that rifle . If I see the need to shoot those kinds of loads I use the T/C Omega as I know it will take it. If you plan to shoot maximum loads all the time I would suggest you look for a USA made rifle with a barrel that has been proofed in the USA. There seems to be a lot of question as to how the spanish rifle barrels are validated. I will continue to shoot mine but with loads below 100gr. Black Powder equivalent. That mean with 777 or BM3 loads below 80gr. That is not what I see you trying if you plan to shoot 200 yards.

200 yards requires a very accurate gun. While possible it is less than likely you will get that for $100. It is just as likely you will spend that money and not have the inherent accuracy to shoot long distance. I'd save up and get a better gun.

A Wolverine is a 200 yard rifle. You can find one of them pretty cheap.

Hey Dispatch-
I own a Magbolt (same as Hunterbolt, but with 26" barrel) and it is a VERY accurate gun. I practice a lot at various ranges out to 200 yards. Some of my shootin buddies and I plot out exact drops at various ranges per load and per gun. That Hunterbolt is a 3" gun at 200 yards from shootin sticks. Practice a lot, find the most accurate loads and know the drop at your intended range. The most accurate load in MY gun is 85 gr. 777, however I use between 80 and 105 gr. 777 with different projectiles and loads. Don't use magnum loads; not because of 'barrel worries', but because accuracy sucks, its loud and all of the powder will not even get burned. My Hunterbolt is as accurate as my buddies' TC poles. I have actually convinced them to back off their 150 gr loads to gain accuracy. I use Powerbelts and feel very comfortable out to 200 yards. Check your load for energy at your max intended range. I have a CVA Hunterbolt in 209x50. I use sabots with a 240 grain, 44 magnum semi wad cutter that I cast myself. With a scope it groups at around 2 1/2 inches at 100 yards. Pretty good for a muzzle loader if you ask me.
