17-222 Load Data
« on: February 16, 2005, 04:15:29 PM »
I recently came into a Sako 461 chambered for 17-222.  I haven't had much experience with wildcatting, so I am wondering where might be a good source to start building a good load for this round.  Thanks in advance.

...........Just use regular book starting loads for the 17Rem BUT backed off 15%......the case volumne is only about 10% different and that should leave you safe.....BE sure to check the neck diameter for tight neck chamber and I had good luck with IMR4198 in a 17Rem for accuracy with a 7 1/2REM primer 25gr. bullets.....hth..good luck and good shooting-loading!!

I bought a Ruger 17/222 for a good price intending to have it re-barrelled to something else.
Of course, before I sent it out I wanted to see what it would do as-is.
After a loooooong cleaning session I loaded a few rounds using max 17 Mach IV loads.  It shoots so well that I'm leaving it as is.
I've been sort of winging it on the loads, but I think you'll find it's worth the effort.
