Buy a scope or use one from my Win. 300
« on: February 19, 2005, 05:38:03 PM »
I have pretty much talked myself into getting a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 for my 308, Tikka Whitetail Hunter.  Then I thought I have a custom Win 300 with a Vari-X 3, 31/2 to 10 power sitting in the cabinet.  The scope is probably 7 years old.  How much am I going to give up if I use it?  The gun is used for tree stand hunting in Canada, under 150 yd. shots.  Need good twilight scope.  I think with all the new scope hype I may have over looked something I already have that would work just fine.  Please tell me what you think.    Thanks  Buckfever

I think your Vari-X 3, 31/2 to 10 power will work great for your intended use.  :D

I own both, and there is no doubt (at least in my experience) that the Zeiss Conquest 3x-9x-40mm has better optics.  Still, there is similary no doubt that the Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x-10x will do just fine for your usage.

Have you considered the Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5x6 or 2.5x10 with the Firefly reticle? They would be good scopes for use in dim light. I had a German #4 reticle installed in my Leupold scope by Premier Reticle and I love it. If you decide to use the Leupold scope for the tree stand hunting I recommend getting a #4 or #4A reticle installed. The thin part of the reticle is just a tad thicker than the thin part of a standard Leupold duplex and the thick part is about three times thicker. It works better for my over 50 eyes.
