Which rings for Simmons 44Mag 6.5-20x44 scope?
« on: February 17, 2005, 02:09:55 PM »
Which rings do I need on my bull barrel Handi Rifle for a Simmons 44 Mag 6.5-20x44 scope?  I want to go as low as possible.  Will MED rings work?  Or should I just go with HIGH rings?

I use Leupold high rings with the Weaver bases. Have the 3 x 10 .44 Mag on two of my Handi's. The problem is hammer clearance, not barrel with the 44 objective. Since all manuf. high rings are not the same, some lower than the Leupolds might work. Also makes a difference how far foward/back your scope needs to be for proper eye relief. I'm sure others will chime in with what they use and have had success with. The rings I use are about $16. at Wal-Mart. I havethem on 3 of my rifles.

Here's my .280 Handi with a WTC18 50mm mounted in medium Burris sig zees, hammer will clear but to use it quickly, the hammer spur extension will need to be installed. Medium sig zees are .270" tall, top of rail to bottom of tube.

Thanks for the replies.  I was more worried about the size of the bell, but I guess it's the hammer that needs the clearance.

Anybody grind the tip of the hammer off?  And then install a hammer extension?

Lucky for me that I like High rings. I use them even on my bolt guns where I could use low rings. I like to keep my head up as far as I can.
shot placement is everything.

I've got the same scope as quick on my 280, with a set of high weavers. I had to do a lot of thinning on the front scope cap to get it on, I've got about 1/8" or less of barrel clearance up front. If it were a 44mag, I'd probably be able to use medium weavers for barrel clearance, but the hammer might be a problem then.
If a receiver is to be used only with scoped barrels, I'd love to de-spur the hammer, cross drill it, and thread in a piece of 4-40 or 6-32 screw, then screw on a couple pieces of knurled 1/4" brass for a hammer extention. That's not a proven idea yet, just a mental concept, but it should work if you make sure the extension does not hit the frame at any part of the hammer's travel.
