I am no gunsmith, barely a hobbyist who likes to mess with old guns sometimes. I am usually working on Model 1873 and 1892 Winchesters. My friend asked me how to take apart his Model 61 .22 Winchester. After looking it over, I am stumped. Is there a quick easy description of takedown procedure someone could give, or perhaps a website with the info? My web searches all come up empty, including this site. If I need to have him buy a book, what do you recommend?

With all due respect, after looking this over and you still have reservations perhaps it would be best to seek a gunsmith. I have one of these, and its a real gem of a rifle.

If nothing is wrong with it I wouldn't take it apart. To take it down is a different story, quite simple , back out the takedown screw and separate into the two major assembleys. I have had one for almost 45 years and only break it down to carry in a back pack. Have never had to take it apart any further.

Yes Papabear, just as pinduck says, when the left side take-down screw is loosened off the gun separates into two parts that break loose fore and aft just below the centrepoint.

Yours must be rusted, gummed up or just plain stubborn. Just get a little agressive after dousing the chamber and breech thoroughly with penetrating oil.

Thanks to both of you for your info. I will get together with my friend's 61 one of these days and we will have what we need to tear it down as needed for refinishing.

Unless the rifles already been altered or is a real dog, refinishing is sure to lower the value. Cleaning is acceptable but refinishing is a collector NO-NO..
