K-31 reloading question
« on: February 14, 2005, 01:34:46 PM »
I posted this in the "handloading" forum, but may have a better chance of getting an answer here.

I am not able to find ANY 7.5 Swiss components or dies.  Is this a caliber best served by surplus ammo??

If you DO reload for it, where might I find the supplies?

Thanks in advance.

Dies are available from http://www.midwayusa.com/ (or just about anyplace else) and brass is available from http://www.grafs.com/

.308 bullets are available everywhere.

I didn't know 7.5mm was a 308.  I guess that's what I get for not looking in the reloading book FIRST.

I had never used Graf's before...now it's a "favorite"

Thanks for the info!

Graf Brass

I use Graf brass for K-31 reloading with excellent results. I also use Graf brass for my Russian Mosin Nagant reloads. The Graf brass is very good brass.

Yea Val I plan on ordering some brass from them this spring after I get my K31 for both that caliber and the 762x54 as you mentioned. I am using Winchester( S&B) brass now but I can only get it as loaded ammo. :( so I will be buying some of the Grafs brass. Glad to see a company catering to us milsurp shooters. Jim

I'm also using Graf brass with Lee dies.  Seems to work well out of my rifle.

The Graf brass is fine and so is the .284 win brass.  If you decided to use the .284 brass be sure to have a good lube on hand like Imperial.  they are tough cases and difficult to form.  They will come up a bit short until they are fired a few times.  If I'm going to load a bit hot, I use .284 brass.  For std pressure loads it's the Graf.

I'm not advocationg loading hot for the K31

Also, make it a point to full length resize your brass.  Some do fine with neck sizing, but others find they have difficulty chambering.  This also applies to COAL.  Load to fit your own rifles chamber and not to a recommended OAL be it book or another shooters recipe.  With the k31 you can have a slightly oversized case that does not chamber completely.  The bolt will seem to have closed and the lock will fall on the firing pin but the pin will be blocked and not hit the primer.  Same thing if the oal is a bit too long.  The serial numbers on the bolt must be rotated completely to top dead center.  If not, your bolt is not closed and the rifle won't fire.

These are wonderful rifles and will serve you well for plinking, match shooting or hunting.  My k31s have accounted for a hog and several elk.

I read in the Hornady book that The case head is not fully supported in these rifles so they do not reccomend HOT loads like Longcruise said.

Long Cruise how do you form the 284 brass? DO you use the standard sizing die for 7.5x55 or do you have to get a special forming die? Jim
