best place for hunting turkeys
« on: February 24, 2005, 03:07:47 AM »
I am just getting into turkey hunting been doing it a few years now
I have only killed one turkey. I was walking down a dirt road going to my truck when I had a turkey walk up to me and just watch as I shouldered my shotgun took aim and fired this was at about 20 -30 feet.

is it better to hunt in thick woods, open woods,  on the edge of fields. or along trails/ roads?

I dunno...ask the turkeys... :)  :-D

Seriously, a good part of that decision if finding de birds first. All the areas you listed are good (fields aren't the best, but it depends). As long as you can conceal yourself and get a bird within range, you're good. I've heard good points in all the places. I know that if you hunt along a logging road, you can hunt in one of the bends, this way you can put the turkey about 20 yards within shooting range instead of, like, in a field, when he might only come in 50 yards before he don't feel like comin in anymore because he can see the decoy and his curiosity is gone.

But that's just my opinion.  :D

the only trouble is the logging road is on public hunting land and it is the main rute in and out of the land. so everyone will be walking up on it and me.

I have found turkey feathers in another part of the land it is some what open. it is close to a large field on private land I have seen large flocks of turkeys in the fields

you can kill jakes anywhere, doing anything... they're unbelievably stupid...  Killing toms is a different deal.  Most toms want to strut where they can attract hens.  in woods this usually means on top of hills or ridges, in agricultural country it usually means in fields.

To find out where to hunt, get there early and listen for gobbles.  Get there.  Several days of learning where birds roost and where they go immediately after fly-down will answer all your questions.
