Has any one here hunted the Nail Ranch in TX?  From there web site it looks like they have good hogs (and no fences, personal preference).

I think me and a buddy are going to go down in March or April I'll let you know how it works out.  Seems like an alright deal for the size of the hogs they have.

Yup and they have lots of unique and unusual options available. You can hunt via horseback or at times they take you out in wagons and have chuck wagon cooks and such if the group is large enough. From all I know and have heard it's a first class operation all the way. Have fun.

Hey Digger, that would be great and would sure work for me if it does for Dennis. He is one of those young whipper snappers who still have a job.  :)  But is taking off some extra time so we don't have to be in a rush. If you do and the invitation is open to him also I'll see if he wants to drop by there for hogs before we head back home. He and I are riding together.

Might be a good chance for him to break in that new FA97 in .44 Special he is gonna be ordering soon. I got him a good deal on it today at the gun shop where I do business. Gonna save him $265 over the price his local gun shop quoted him.

G.B. I've got several bunches located now,and if the dog hunters will stay off of them, they'll stay around for awhile. We may have to use my boat for some locations(19' lowe roughneck) but it can haul a lot of meat in it.
If you and Dennis have time,we may set some juglines out for you some fresh Ok. catfish, and stripers.  Digger

I spect me and Dennis just might make some time. Sounds like a winner to me. I'll run it by Dennis but I'm sure he'll like the idea too. As the event draws closer we just need to firm up whether to do it on the way out or back.

I hunted a day lease for hogs a few years back that butted up against the Nail ranch.  The property I hunted on was kinda bare bone as far as stands went but they had some feeders that were sitting in shallow water in stock tanks and the "blind" was a folding steel chair sitting on the tank dam. The first hogs I saw were so big that I mistook them a calves from the giant cattle (Santa Gertrudis) that were on the place until they moved off and it was too late for a shot. It was real foggy that first morning. As I was sitting sort of stunned at the size of the hogs I had missed my opportunity on I heard bubbling coming from the pond and a huge boar was eating corn under water the feeder had slung and I shot him in the neck with my 30-06. He was 300 pounds and turned out to be good eating. The others had to be near 500 pound hogs. One thing that threw me off on the big ones is that they were eating the tips of branches on mesquite trees, didn't know they did that.

:D I live just about 45 miles southwest of the Nail Ranch.  I have hunted there several times, never went away disappointed.  THe ranch was established in 1836, it has been in the family since.  Albany was originally a buffalo hunting area and one of major trade centers for buffalo skins. it sprang up from old Fort Davis.   The country is rolling hills, with a few larger hills, bluffs and flat mesa.  It's mostly cattle country.  There are several big (and old ) ranches in the area, all have had some form of game management for years, the deer hunting is excellent.

Pig hunting is an additional money crop for these ranchers.  They started as pest, and lots of old ranchers use to shoot and leave them laying because they destroy so much grazing land, along with fences,. water holes and food plots.  Since people are willing to pay for the hunt, they are taking advantage of it.

You said you would be here in the March-April time frame.  The weather is so unpredictable during this period I would be prepared for hot (70-80 degree) weather, but bring along clothing for cold weather too.  Try to dress in layers, it may be cold early or late (30-40 degrees) and hit the highs during the day.  It would also be advisable to bring rain gear, we often have rain during that period.  Two-three years ago it was 80 degrees on thursday, on saturday we had 9 inches of snow and 30 degrees, with winds 15-20 mph.  That was the second week-end of April.

Albany is a nice little town, reminds you of the old west.  Like all county seats in Texas, it has a beautiful old courthouse that is open to the public.  And while there don't miss the Beehive restaurant, them folks will put a good feed on you.  It's on Hwy 180 on the west end of town.  If you can think of any other information you need, give me a post and I will try to answer.

Darn, that sounds like it was written by a member of the champer of commerce...........
