building a silhouette rifle in 7mm-08
« on: February 21, 2005, 10:58:42 AM »
I'm shopping about, looking to build a rifle.  Off the shelf rifles just do not fit, and in my experience, it's always easier to simply get someone to build what you want, not to compromise and fix.  So anyway:

I'm looking long and hard at a HS2000 action from H & S precision.  Looks like an excellent rifle, although weight could be tricky.
Anyone using this action?

2nd option: buy a 700 stailess rifle, strip, use action.  Add H & S detachable magazine (I don't like top loading magazines at all-detachables, if reliable, are better)

3rd option: sako 75.  Harder than all hell to find, but top quality.

The trick is this: the stock MUST be sako style, if not weatherby.  I just cant stand straight drop stocks with scopes.  It's obvious that straight drop stocks are meant to work with iron sights!  Why do manufacturers insist on using these stocks, when pratcially all rifles these days are scoped?

Anyway, if I get a H & S or 700 Rem, I can then shop around for a sako style or weatherby synthetic stock.

Or even better, anyone use a www.robertsoncomposites.com silhouette stock??  Looks really good for offhand.

Thanks in advance

Before you drop a lot of cash for an HS2000 I would get a Rem 700 action and strip it down for the action and sell the remaining parts.  I personally would get the action blueprinted but this is optional and maybe not necessary for a silhouette rifle.  If money is no object and you just need to have the best buy a custom repeater action.

Next I would get a custom barrel from one of the top barrel makers in the caliber and contour of your choice and chamber it for a suitable hunter caliber.  I would go with a .260 Rem before a 7mm-08 and you may want to check out a 7mm BR as well although loading all rounds into the magazine and maintaining reliable feeding may be an issue as I cannot get my .22BR Varmint/Bench gun to feed properly.  I would certainly put all of the guts into a Pharr or Nesika Hunter Stock from Ian.

I have a Nesika Hunter Stock inletted and pillar bedded for a Rem 700 short action that I need to sell, so far I have just been too lazy to list it.  HINT! HINT!

If you have gone this far you owe it to yourself to get one of Marvin the Metalhead Pearson's ring and base set-ups to save a bunch of weight that can go into the barrel contour or a weight system to better balance the rifle.

You may or may not want to look into getting an Anschutz two stage trigger before your gun is put together and bedded as material will have to be removed from the trigger well to fit the assembly to hang the Annie trigger on the Rem action.

Wait a minute; was this the Ultimate Hunter Rifle thread?

Tell me more about this Nesika stock you're selling: cost, condition, color, length of pull??

Also, where would I find Marvin Pearson and his scope rings?

Hi Troy
Being a fellow Canadian and also putting together a silhouette hunting rifle I may be interested in the Nesika stock. Do you have any other goodies such as 7mm barrels?

Marvin posts on this forum as Metalhead.

The stock is in brand new condition.  I will look at my bills and see about a price.  I bought two of the stocks; one I am using for my Hunter and the other is sitting in my gun safe.  I believe the LOP is 14.25 inches.  Look at my avatar, that is the stock I would be selling.

He knows his stuff!
