Leupold Vari-X I's
« on: February 12, 2005, 05:01:15 PM »
Are the Vari-X I's a decent scope? I am looking for a scope for a NEF Handi Rifle in 30-30. I am thinking that the Shotgun/Vari-X I 1-4 might fit the bill. Any thoughts?

Sure they are. BUT they are not nearly the equal of the Bushnell Elite 3200 and they cost more. Hardly makes sense to me but then some folks just gotta have a Leupold even if it means paying more for less.

I am guilty as charged. I can't seem to figure out why, but if it doesn't say Leupold, I don't want to trust it. My bad and I'll admit it. I am open to suggestions though. I also thought about a Weaver K2.5. It seems like a nice and simple scope that will get the job done but I haven't seen one in person though.

Have no experience with that Weaver. I used a lot of the older Weaver scopes but finally figured out there was much better and gave them up. The newer Weaver scopes I have bought and tried have been major disappointments to me. Not saying I'll never have another but if I do it won't be bought sight unseen. I'll have to hold it and look thru it and make up my mind from there.

I honestly don't think there is a better value right now in standard hunting type scopes than the Bushnell Elite 3200s. Mueller is about to come out with a hunting 2-7 I want to take a look at and see if it's as good as the larger Mueller scope I reviewed. If so, that should be a real bargain also. They now have a 2-7 I think it is that's a turkey hunting scope. I've not seen one but have heard some good comments on it.

I've got the Mueller Multi-shot mounted on my .30-30 Topper, great scope...haven't got it to the range yet, but I'm surely looking forward to shooting with it on the topper.....here's my initial review...

I am a Leupold snob.  :)  I would go with the Leupold.  :D

I would go with the leupold. I have several vx-1's and am very happy. Lifetime coverage, great sevice. Not a place to save a couple bucks. At $200 I think they are well worth it.

For $200 I would get an Elite 3200 or Nikon Buckmaster - preferably the 3200.

All the Leupolds are, in my opinion, overpriced, but I would at least get the VX-II if it had to be a Leupold.

The one thing that I just can't stand about the VX-I is that it has "friction" adjustments rather than "click" adjustments.     Why??  Even cheap scopes don't have friction adjustments, why should a $200 scope?

I agree with Zachary.  From personal experience I would buy a Nikon, Elite, Conquest, or Burris over any Leupold ever made.  Not that Leupold's are not good scopes....there's just as good or better for less money.

Yes, Redhawk, I was waiting to see when you would come along. :)

One of these days when I become a rich man I am going to do two things:

1.  Buy a Tikka T3 stainless rifle for Graybeard (TO KEEP, NOT SELL).
2.  Buy you an Elite 4200 (again, TO KEEP, NOT SELL).

I have a 3 of VX1 in 2-7x and 1  3-9x.  They are good scopes and will serve the average person.  Now I must say the following:

1.  I only buy gloss finish scopes so that throws out the 3200's and the cheaper Nikons and many others.

2. I cannot afford to pay over $150-200 for a scope.  So the Leupold is one of the better options in that price range for a gloss scope.

3.  I am not an optic snob and am not super critical about optical quality.  All of my scopes will serve me during normal hunting hours which is all I require.  I do not make spreadsheets up comparing light transmission and optical quality numbers.  As long as it is clear and usable to the end of hunting hours, it is good for me.  I can tell a difference between a $50 scope and a $200 scope, but for my use I cannot tell that much difference between a $200 scope and a $300-400 scope.  I know they are there, but as long as I can see an animal to the end of legal shooting hours, who cares since I cannot afford it anyway.

I do have a 3-9 in the older Vari-X II series and it serves me no better than the VX1's.

Get what looks good to you and you can afford.

Bullseye....spend your $200 on a Burris FFII.  It will perform circles around the VXI you consider.
