500 S&W Handi...
« on: February 23, 2005, 07:02:28 AM »
Ok experts, where exactly does the new 500 S&W Handi fit in the scheme of things?  Sure, it is a great handgun cartridge, but in a rifle does it really fill any niche?  You know what I mean?  Can a 500 S&W do anything better than a .45-70?

The 500 produces mid to slightly above 45-70 performance.  The 45-70 can go beyond it, but the 500 is already maxed out.  It's like the 450 Marlin.  If you don't want to reload but want high performance go fo it.

Ammo might be a bit pricey though.

Quite simply...no....

I do hope they work out all the problems and make them work good in the Handi...at 60,000 PSI though I think it might be more difficult...but...who-knows...if the frames and lugs can withstand all the strains...then it does open ip a few other possibilities with them...

Mac,
I am no expert, and I am NOT a masochist, but if the 500 S&W is sporting 60,000 psi and can be shot with a Handi....   Isn't that beyond Marlin 1895 pressures and getting into Ruger #1 territory???

Seems to me that at the old H&R site folks said to use the same recipes as the 1895 when reloading the Handi...

Ah heck. It's just that pistol rounds are getting bigger and bigger, and chambering a rifle for it is just plain fun! :-D

I like something that can kill anything better. I think the .500 S&W would make a dandy prairie dog round at close range, hehehehehe :-D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

Pressures aren't all that is involved, the 22-250, 270 win and 300 win mag all have max average pressures of 64-65,000, but the 300 win mag is not chambered in the Handi and it's the least of the 3!!

http://www.leverguns.com/articles/saami_pressures.htm

I don't think the 500S&W runs at 60,000 according to this article, it runs a 50,000 max, unlike the 454 Casull..

It is particularly significant that even though the .500 S&W Magnum cartridge tops out at more than a ton and a quarter of muzzle energy, all the loads operate under 50,000 psi, which, incidentally, is significantly less than the 60,000 psi SAAMI-limit MAP for the smaller caliber .454 Casull.

MAP= Max average pressure

I was all set to get one... was getting really excited about the prospect of the big 50 but in the end, the good folk here changed my mind.  I got the 45-70 instead.  No regrets, I like the ol bugger.

I was going by what I read of the new .460 S&W pistol...in the article in Aprils 2005 Guns & Ammo...( starting on page 64) is the article...perhaps I misunderstood what the Author was saying...here's what he said...
Quote
The .460's straight-wall 1.80 inch case employs a Large Rifle primer to deal with the heftier charge. The maximum average pressure of the .460 is 65,000 psi-5000 psi more than the .500 S&W's pressure limit and equaling several .300 magnum-class rifle cartridges.
the Author is Payton Miller

So...if I sated this incorrectly I'm sorry...

Hmm, makes ya wonder why the inconsistencies between the specs of the 2 articles. Perhaps the Shootings Times article is old, I saw no date on it and specs have been updated in the last year???? The only date I saw in it referred to the '02 SHOT show. :?

I just peeked in my 2004 Hodgdon Annual Reloading manual, it shows the highest pressure for the 440gr load at 50600psi, FWIW.

Would a straight walled case apply the same reward thrust as a bottle neck given all else equal?

I am thinking not just because isn't it one of the benefits of AI'ing a round less reward thrust because of the straighter walls?

I'm kinda thinking that any critter hit under 100 yards with either the .500 S+W or the 45-70, won't be able to figure out which hit it. That .500 S+W makes a lot more sense to me in a carbine configuration than it does in a handgun.
