45-70 Handi Question
« on: February 24, 2005, 11:55:40 AM »
I am thinking about going to order a 45-70 Handi and I want to reload for it.  In the vast experience of other 45-70 handi owners that reload, will the classic lee loader do all the reloading that I need for this cartridge or would it be better to buy the hand press and dies.
I don't have the room for a standard press set up.

If someone would post some pictures of their 45-70 handi-s it would be great while I wait on mine.

THANKS  for all the great information that I have gathered from this site.

If you'll go to www.castbullet.com Junior, who posts here from time to time has a really good article on his introduction to the .45-70 Handi.

I see no reason the Lee Loader won't do everything you might want to do with the 45-70. I know one fellow who hangs about uses one and I wouldn't be surprised to find that a couple more use on too.

45-70 Handi Question

I'm a new handloader myself, started last year with a Lee Loader, it was so much fun, I decided to get a Lee Classic Cast press with dies for the 45-70 and the 45-120 Buffalo Classic I'm currently working on....the Lee Loader works just fine for basic handloading and the 45-70 is probably one of the easiet to load for from what I've learned, it shoots pretty much any load with good hunting accuracy and some loads extremely well.

One of Junior Doughty's best articles is on his 45-70 Handi shooting black powder loads.

Bks,
I have Lee Loaders in .45-70 and .280 and couldn't be happier with them...very easy and fast to reload a box.

45-70 Handi Question

BKS, I have a couple of presses and used to reload quite a bit and am getting back into it. I have had and used Lee Loaders for about 45 years (!!!) and still have my original .38/.357 Lee Loader. I am reloading for my 45-70 now with a Lee Loader and for the cost involved I highly recommend one. I would bet that even if you decide to go into reloading in a big way you will keep and use the Lee Loader. Go for it, you will be happy with it....<><....

Dear BKS:
I've got a 45/70 Handi, and the Lee Loader for it. I'm very pleased with both!

you bet! The Lee Loader and 45-70 are great together. I used only Lees for 45-70 and 303 Brit for years. Only went to a press and dies when I started high volume 38 Specials and 45 ACP. They provide the most inexpensive handloads.
Good shooting..mt

The Lee hand press and dies work well also, you can fit all you need to reload (includeing powder, primers, and bullets) in a small suitcase useing the hand loader or leeloaders. 8)
