I have this rifle my father purchased for me new I think in the fall of 1976 . Has anyone seen this before? ser#A7068771 Any idea of value?

Remington Model 742 Woodmaster Automatic Big Game Rifle:
Gas operated semiautomatic. Calibers: 6mm Rem., .243 Win., .280 Rem., 30-06, .308 Win., 4-shot clip magazine. 22-inch bbl. Weight 7.5 lbs. Sights: open rear; bead front, on ramp.  Checkered pistol-grip stock and forearm.  Made 1960-80.........$300.

There must be a Remington Collectors site somewhere & that's where I would ask about your mis-marked 742.

A 742 can be converted to a 760 and vica versa fairly easily. The recievers are basically the same, only what ativates the operating rods differ. I would suspect you have a hybrid rifle.

Bruce,

I am a collector of the model 760's and if what you describe is true:
"Model 742 Stamped 760 Gamemaster" than you have a very desirable collector piece. There were a few 760 rifles that left the factory with the incorrect receiver. If you are the original owner with original paperwork,
your rifle could be worth a good amount of $$$ to the right collector. I have seen genuine factory error 760's (incorrect receivers, etc) that brought as much as $2500+.
It is NOT unethical to shoot at running deer. That's hunting!!
