What is the most useful?
« on: February 21, 2005, 01:40:33 PM »
I recently received a gift certificate to Cabelas.  Here is my dilemma.  I have got it down to several options but cannot make up my mind what is the best way to go. I have been pondering on this for over a week.  It is driving me nuts. :?

1.  RCBS Digital Scale
2.  Shooting Chrony
3.  RCBS Trim Mate
4.  More Bullets
5.  Electronic Earmuffs- obviously not a reloading item.

I have none of these, and am not sure if I need any of them.  But what would you consider the most useful?

2. Shooting Chrony

Makes trips to the range much more interesting.  And you make a lot of friends who want to chrono their loads.

I'd most likely get a chronograph. I did without one for many years. But I'd never go without one now. The digital scale would be my second choice.

The chroney no question.  It will tell you what your barrels do vs. published data and allow you to compate results with diff powders at similar velocity.

I would go with the chronograph.  :D

Not to upset anyone by being different, but I'd go for a chronograph. No, really.

Cronographs are great things to have (I have a crony), but I like my Trim Mate and use it more!!
It saves a lot of cramped hands!

I vote chronograph too. You won't use it a lot unless you do a lot of load development, but it's a great tool that is well worth having.

The Trim Mate
« Reply #9 on: February 22, 2005, 03:45:33 AM »
The trim mate is a real labor saving device. However if you hunt, I would get a chrono first. Knowing the muzzle velocity of your loads allows you to compute the bullet drop of you loads, at different ranges.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

Go with the chronograph.
You will be able to see the velocity of a given load in YOUR rifle/pistol to compare it to the published loading data.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.

My order of choice would be

1.  Digital scale - Never wanted one till I had one, now I always want one

2.Electronic Earmuffs - Now that I have gotten used to them , can't imagine without being without

3.  Trim Mate - It does making trimming cases and cleaner primer pockets more fun

4.  Shooting Chrony - Have been without one for many years.  I have always been able to develop an accurate load without one and I have never had an animal complain because of the velocity.

5.  More bullets - you can buy them anytime, they are cheap.  Get something bigger and more useful.

1. digital scale - if you have used a good one you can load much faster and handier

2. Chrony - more useful if you load more......see #1

3. more bullets - see #1

4. I got power tools that do anything a trimmer mate thing does

5. electronic hearing protection...if you shoot more they are very handy see #1........shop around for these as they are continually getting less and less expensive. My first set cost me $170....you can get some now for less than 50 bucks.

I have all of the above.......except more bullets........you can never have enough of those

Congratulations on the gift certificate. I would agree with the majority of the replies to this post, a chrony is a very nice tool to own and because the lions share of the money is not coming out of your pocket, it’s a nice little luxury item (also practical). The only other item on your list I would buy with a gift certificate is the trim mate. It’s a very handy tool, saves a lot of time, and saves wear and tear on your wrists and fingers.  When my trim mate burns out years from now, I’ll waste no time replacing it.

I'd get the RCBS Trim Mate. Sure would hate to be without mine. Then save your bucks and buy a quality Oehler chrono when you can afford it.
