Don't have a .357 Max, but I've used both of these in a .35 Rem in a Contender.  They perform about the same in my experience, so choose the one with the best accuracy.

I use them both in my357 max, 357 herrett and 35 rem barrels.Like Ron said which ever is the most accurate in your gun. The hornady does the best in my max barrel.

If you are looking for a real good wound chanel give the 180 Hornady XTP a try. With 296 and this bullet I have taken several deer with it and never had to go more than 10 yards to get the deer. Through the lungs you will get 1 1/2" exit's. I have never looked for another bullet when the xtp's have done so well. Accuracy out of my 14" competitor is 1" at 100 yards and this load goes 1950 out of my barrel.
Good luck with which ever bullet you choose.
A new caliber for deer every year...what a way to play!

I 2nd the last  post about the 180gr Hornady XTP's. They do an amazing job on deer. I've recovered two bullets out of deer that were a perfect mushroom after nearly going thru deer lenght-wise. A healthy dose of H110 and you've got a 150yd deer stopper. I was impressed by it's stopping power. Mines a 14" but they say 10" is the perfect lenght for this caliber.

I've taken two small deer with my 357 Max and the Hornady 180 XTP.  Dropped a small doe in her tracks this year and last year broke both shoulders on a button buck.  Shots were 30-35 yds.  10" barrel.

Shot a little low on a large buck this past season at about 55 yds, just grazed him low.
