several years ago, I had a 35 whelen, rocky mountain elk edition in my hands and no money in my pocket.  by the time I got back to the show, the gun was gone.  any one have one of these?  last week, when I ordered my mannlicher forend, I was told the there were no plans to offer this caliber again, but-----if enough people ask, they may do a special run.  so is anyone else interested in it?    jim

Hey Jim,
What are you refering to when you said you ordered a mannlicher forend....for a H&R/NEF????

As for the whelen, I would definately buy one, or the barrel!!!  The NEF .35 Whelen is really hard to find...been lookin' for a few years.  When you find one, the person selling it thinks it is some sort of collectors item and wants $500+ for it!!!!

Yes the RMEF .35 Whelen's are out there.  I bought one off of Gunbroker.com for a good price because someone could not spell Whelen. They had it listed as a Whelan.

Mine was used in new condition but I have never fired it.

Shot my .35 Whelen yesterday at the range.  I have a standard Handi in .35 Whelen, not a RMEF model.  First time I've shot it since having the trigger redone at the factory.  Shoots nice.  I got a thread going back during the fall, about having everyone e-mail NEF about bringing back the .35 Whelen.  Several people sent in e-mails but no responce yet from NEF.  A lot of people would like to have one, or at least a barrel.  I think they would do better with the Whelen than some of their current listings.  It's the only true big game cartridge they ever made.  By big game I mean, Elk, Moose, Bison, Grizzly/Brown Bear.  Oh yes we have Bison running wild up here.  Takes a lot to stop one.

There's a thread over at the Marlin board, fella shot a bison 3 times with a 45-70 300gr Nosler partition from between 30 and 60yds before it was done for....I thought he was placing his shots a little high or not high enough, though....

i wanted a 35 whelen in a handi rifle for a long time and i ended up finding two of them.i just looked them over and walked away.the price was up there to high for me.one was priced at $350.00 and the other one was at $375.00.as much as i like the handi rifles and all i can tell you i dont like them that much$$ if you know what i mean.i do have a custom 98 mauser in 35WhelenAI now and i love the rifle.if nef was ever to offer the whelen again or just the barrel i would get one.

great calliber for sure :wink:

So you must be the one who STOLE my Whelen!!!  Did you buy it around 2-2.5 years ago????  Man, I had to go to Champaign for work and was in the air when the auction ended!!!! :twisted:

Yes, I emailed NEF lastnight about offering a Whelen...  Is it REALLY that much work to turn out three dozen or so barrels to see how they sell?  Obviously, they have all the tools and the specs to make them...

This is the only downfall to H&R/NEF...the lack of calibers.  I know my buddies back in Michigan took the Encore route for this very reason.  They know my NEF .280Rem shoots tight even with the factory 20lb. trigger, but they liked the endless options of barrels for the Encore.

Just ordered my Mannicher-style forend...  Asked the lady at customer service to "beg someone to make the .35 Whelen barrel."  Her reply was, "We already did that; made about 1000 of 'em."  Is that true?  If they sold out 1,000 of 'em, and there is still demand, why wouldn't  they make another run of 'em?  ....looks like I will end up giving up and getting a Rem 7600 in .35 Whelen....

Jimmygun:  The recoil was comperable to my 30-06 with a 250gr bullet.  After all it's a 30-06 case.  Just like with a 30-06 the heavier the bullet the more recoil it has.  The nice things about bullet weights for the .35 Whelen range from 130gr to 250gr for handloaders.  You can load pistol bullets to get light loads for plinking or for training kids.  Then load the heavy weights for big game.  

Yes they did do a run of 1000 several years ago.  They were put out as the Rocky Mountain Elk Federation Commerative.  Which ran the price up.  They may have had an agreement with the RMEF not to do another run in that caliber.  That's the only reason I can think of that they won't make another run.

That seems like a strange request from RMEF...but like you, I can't think of another reason not to make a run of 'em.

I don't know about that supposed agreement with RMEF, it does not make much sense. They did make another run of .357 Mag barrels so I see no reason why continued and increased pressure/requests for another  limited run of .35 Whelen barrels would not eventually work. It won't hurt to keep the pressure up, I have my .35 Whelen barrel but wish you guys luck, just don't quit trying....<><.... :grin:

Can't understand why they keep coming out with all these new calibers that don't fill a specific nich, yet won't make a new run on the .35 Whelen.  The Whelen fill a nich that nothing else fills.  The 45-70 comes close in some aspects, so does the 30-06 in others.  The Whelen does not have the deep penatration of the 45-70, but has higher velocity and better point blank range.  The 06 has even better range but does no hit as hard.

Unfortunately, if they ever do bring it back, it will be available as a complete gun only I bet.   They would not make much money on it as a accessory barrel only.

Well, at least I got a reply from Customer Service.....

"WE TRIED THE 35 WHELEN OUNCE AND WE COULDN'T SELL THEM  MAYBE SOMEDAY THEY WILL TRY THEM AGAIN  WE WILL PASS THE INFO ON"

My note was slightly more professional.  I'll give them credit for the quick response.  I wuspect this needs to be a long, continued hum to get their attention.
