What is the approx. current value of one of these? A guy on another forum has one for sale with a Litschert Spot-Shot 7/8" objective lens scope mounted. He wants a total of $350. Is this a good price? Being a S&W forum, the guys there aren't very familiar with Savage rifles. :?:

More than I would pay for one of them.  The accuracy of these rifles were never what one would call excellent.  The new one that I had when they first came out was never good - 2" was about the best I could get with reloads and factory loads were even worse.  My opinion is to save your money and get a better .22 Hornet than that one.  Lawdog

More than I would pay. I had one several years ago. The triggers are real bad and there`s not much you can do for them. The one I had drove me nuts. I worked up a load that shot about 1/2 moa. Used it for a year or so and the accuracy went to crap. Done alot of playing around and load work with the rifle and got it shooting like that again,    , for a while. Seem like it would drive tacks for awhile, then group like a shotgun for awhile. It`s one of the guns I lost in a fire and really didn`t miss.

I had one of those for years and killed a truckload of groundhogs with it.
The one I had shot great for a Hornet.
The problem was the scope mount.  It uses a heavy sheet metal style side mount that moves the POI like a thermocoil everytime the temp. changes.
I don't know what they sell for in this day and age, but $350 sounds a little high to me.

I just bought one of these at a local gunshow for $200 out the door with a Weaver 2 3/4 scope on it.

Question for those with one already...is the bore .224 or .223?  There seems to be some confusion as to when the changeover in bore diameter was made.  Appreciate any input before I go and order a bunch of components from Midway.

I would imagine itÂ’s .223 but to be sure I would contact Savage and ask them.  Lawdog

Savage website says they do not have access to historical information.  I was hoping someone here had a mid-50s rifle and could tell me what they shoot in it.  Not sure my ability to slug a barrel will be able to tell the difference btwn .223 and 224.

If built after WWII, the bore should be .224.  I always used .224's and never had an accuracy or pressure problem.  $350?  Too high.  They were built with a trigger designed for cheap single shot .22's and can't be fixed.  You will never get the bedding right.  The barrel is held in by a screw pulling down on a barrel band.  Its a wonder any of them shoot at all.  I've had either 2 or 3 (can't remember) and they were all good shooters.  Not bench guns, but good field guns.  All would hold well under 1.5", more like 1.25", not less, BUT I live where temperatures and humidity don't fluctuate that much.  To collectors, the scope is probably worth well more than the rifle its on.
