New Marlin 917v feed problems
« on: February 01, 2005, 12:51:07 PM »
Just bought a new 917v and its a great shooter.  Only problem is when i try to load a round from the mag, the nose of the bullet hits below the chamber and won't feed.  Anyone else experience this problem?  Anyone know a fix for this?  The mag seems really loose, and if I place my hand under the mag and apply a little upward movement it feeds smoothly.  Would not be a good thing in field situations.  Thanks for any suggestions.

The magazine fit on the rail in the rifle can be tightened by squeezing the track on the back of the mag in vise so it just slides on the rail, there shouldn't be much if any looseness once you have done this. The rail itself can be adjusted to fix the feed problem by installing the mag then pushing the bottom of the mag toward the muzzle to bend the rail slightly until the rounds feed properly. I had to do these tricks to both of my 917s to get things right.

Trust quick, he knows what hes talking about.....he told me to do that, and now mine works great......if I get a FTF, then I just take the mag. out and put it back in, and push forward on it slightly......when I first did it, I didnt even realize I had done anything, but it works 100% perfect now.

The mag track that's on the back of the mag can be squeezed with a vise or a pair of visegrip pliers, just be careful to close it up a little at a time, if you get it too tight, it won't slide into the mag well. If you do close it up too much, use a wide blade flat tip screwdriver to spread the track open a bit. The feeding issue bends the rail within the rifle that the track on the mag slides on, it bends fairly easily, so don't push forward on it too hard.

David, I use Burris Signature Zees on any rifle that I can get em for, they aren't cheap, but they also don't cause any ring marks or stress on scope tubes. They also allow the use of their offset inserts to compensate for misaligned bases or mounting holes which the Marlins are notorious for. Before you mount the bases that came with the rifle, install the base screws without the bases, then place as long a straight edge as you have against the side of the screws and see if the straight edge lines up with the centerline of the barrel. If it runs off to one side, the mount holes are not lined up properly. Do the same with the bases after they are mounted, some bases have been drilled with off center holes, also. If the holes are OK, but the bases are bad, you can buy Weaver #16 bases and install them, or the other alternative is to buy 3/8" rimfire rings to be installed on the dovetail in the receiver, I would recommend BKL if you can buy them locally, or they are available online at www.bkltech.com  Ring height depends on the size of the objective on the scope you choose. I have mediums on my 917VS with a 40mm AO scope that measures 2.05" in diameter, there's about 1/10" clearance, just enough for the scope covers to slide on. A good online source for Burris Sig Zees is www.theopticzone.com
