.357 MAX Questions
« on: March 01, 2005, 09:32:04 AM »
Could some direct me to where I can get information on this artridge when loaded with the spire point rifle bullets.

  Also a few quick questions:
How would you get a barrel rechambered to this from 357 Mag, I mean do yopu have to do it yourself, or is there anyone out there doing it?

What are the ballistics like on this round? How far would it be good for deer?

Can someone please post a picture of one of the loaded rounds.

  Thanks in advance

You can get loads from the Hornady reloading manul for 200grn spire point bullets.  I am currently using the 200grn Remington as "one" of my loads for the max.  As for ballistics my max is slightly edging the 35 remington in FPS and producing great benchrest groups at 100 yards.  I have killed several deer with my max contender using 180 grn xtp bullets my longest shot was just over 100 yards but that was with a hand cannon, the rifle gives about 500fps over my 10" contender barrel.

As for the reamer it is pretty easy, someone here has it I think DJ.  I rented it from him last year to rechamber my handi and it was really easy and took about 15 min.
I must be crazy.

You can view the cartridge drawings at the link below. The Max case is approx a third of an inch longer than the mag.

It just seems like it would be a really neat cartridge to have, something few others use and would turn a few heads.

I have a 243 Ultra light Handi that I bought for my oldest son and may send it back for a 357, I guess I better hurry up and decide before they run out of barrels.

ive been shooting a 180gr Speer flat nose bullets with a max load of w296.these Speer bullets are more of a semi spitzer bullet than a flat nose.out of a contender they shoot almost 1900fps.Hornady has a 180gr spitzer single shot pistol bullet thats a winner too.the 357max rifles are  getting more fps than the pistols and i hope some of max shooters reply here on your post

leftoverdj has a reamer to rechamber a barrel and you can do it your self.it took me about 15 or 20 seconds to do the job

I think I spent more time opening and repackageing the reamer than I did doing the work, Thanks again DJ. I love my max, great shootin hard hitting low recoil. Bout got it covered don't it.

Spire pointed bullets shot ok out of mine but where it really shines is with big cast bullets or hornaday XTPs mine seems to prefer 180grainers but shoots the 200s well also. 200gr bullets made for the 35 rem work well to but I'm happy with the LBT style cast.

Just for fun load up some 145gr win silver hollow points and let a watermelon have it, The results are spectacular to say the least. I shot a basketball  plus sized one and there wasn't a single peice left over an inch square, good fun.

The choices are many any .38/.357 bullet to .35 Rem to .35 Whelen will work. They also have a unique sound, Did I mention fun to shoot? 8)
