Any 250 Savage Shooters Here???
« on: February 23, 2005, 02:31:13 PM »
While talking to some people here on GBO, a couple of them have mentioned the 250-3000 Savage to be a good pistol round. Does anyone here shoot this round and how do you like it. I sold off my Contender stuff and I want to get a pistol barrel for my new Encore. I'm thinking the 250 Savage or the 250 Savage-Ackley would be a neat deer / varmint round. I was kind of wanting to start off with something that could be loaded up or down for deer and varmints.
I am already set up for 6PPC and thought that would be a neat pistol round but have found no posts on it either. I'm not sure how good a .243 bullet in a pistol would do on deer.
I have 7-08 dies and 7-30 Waters dies as well. Maybe use one of those for deer and another barrel...say the 204 Ruger for varmints.
So many options, all suggestions and opinions are welcome.
Thanks,
Stan

Would the 250 Savage be a Round for the Contender ?
If so I would like one.

I have a 250 Sav. in a 15 inch barrel for the Encore and a 15 inch 7/08 as well.  Both are very accurate but the 250 Sav outshines the 7/08 by far. It and the 357 Maxi are my favorite pistol barrels. I only wish it was a 250 Ack Imp but it shoots to good to mess with. I also have a 250 Sav in a Mauser action and a Ruger RSI in 250 Savage. Did I mention I like the 250 Savage?

My only current .250 Savage is in an XP-100 handgun.  I originally built the pistol with a very heavy (1" thick) Hart 1:12 barrel and glued it into a McMillan stock with a 10X Burris on top.  With its favorite loads and custom BR bullets it fired 20-shot aggregates of 0.35 moa.  I won a number of Precision Shooting postal matches with it in the early 1990s; with 90-grain LBT cast bullets and 8.5 grains of AA5 (no filler) it won a number of Cast Bullet Association postals too.  It was the most accurate firearm I've ever owned.

I've since had the barrel turned down and stuck it in a Fagen laminated thumbhole stock with a 2-7 Burris, and it is a lot of fun.  Not quite as accurate as before to be sure, but it will still agg in the 0.7s for twenty shots.  It really likes Speer 87 TNTs and Nosler 85 BTips.  And it doesn't weigh 8 pounds anymore either.

make a damn decision!

any risk of acting agressively is most certainly outweighed by the risk of sitting on your  butt and  acting like a liberal.

I found on one web sight that listed 45,000 cup. I could not find this info. on the SAAMI site. Maybe someone else would knows more about it.
If if I went with the 250 Ackley, where could I get load data for the Encore pistol. Also how does the 250 perform on deer?
Thanks for all the replies,
Stan

I have one in Encore 21" and every deer I have shot with it dropped.  The most one ran was 30yds.  I am shooting Nosler BT and getting excellent pass through and blood trail (on the one that ran 30yds).  I shoot H380 with 100gr. BT and am getting on average 2860fps.
