7.62x39 -308 bore
« on: March 07, 2005, 11:42:23 AM »
FOLKS,
I've just aquired a 20" SS 7.62x39 barrel for a T/C Encore ,  & I'm looking for some good data for a 125gr/130gr bullet for deer hunting in PA.
It should be close to a 30-30,maybe a little lighter. The bore is .308 NOT 310/311 as most of the SKS AK type rifles are. If anyone has used this for deer I'd like to hear how you like it & if you feel it's enough gun. Thank you in advance for your time , & help.

Check the powder manufactures web pages, the best places to get data on the net. As for power I hit a deer this year with a 7.62 x 39 with Russian soft point ammo. I hit him to far fordward because there was a power pole in frount of him, but it litterly flipped him over backwards. The first time I ever seen that done with any round, including shotgun slugs. Speer makes a 130 grn. FNHP that you might want to try on groundhogs and coyotes. Real good varnint bullet, if your not saveing hides.

I'd go ahead and use any reputable 7.62x39 data with a .308 bullet of the same weight. I'd also be willing to shoot the cheap surplus stuff for plinking. We've been talking about this over on the NEF  Centerfire Board.
