Anybody have a Stevens Favorite 22? If so how do they look and how do they shoot?

I have one of the modern ones. It is well made and mine has a nice walnut stock. I gave it a few coats of oil and it came to life. I have seen some made since ( mine is a couple years old) with plain jane mystery wood stocks. It works well, shoots better than I can with open sights, and makes me feel like a kid again. These were sitting in the porch corners and milk houses all over Wisconsin 50 years ago. If I am going for a walk in the woods the Favorite comes with me most of the time.

No scope drilling, and I wouldn't know why not. I have buckets full of Long Rifles, so haven't messed with anything else. And knock on wood have never had a failure to fire.

If you get one I hope you have as much fun with yours as I am having with mine. I hope to have some grandkids some day and will teach them how to shoot using this simple little gun.

An original Stevens Favorite was my first gun. It was given to me by my father when I was 9 years old after shooting my first squirrel with it. This gun had been the family "hog killin" gun forever.! It shot shorts, longs or long rifles, as it is a single shot, falling block. Scope mounting may have to be done totally on the barrel as the top of the reciever is very short on these rifles. Some years later I sold a pig, bought a Win. mod 69. I wanted the Favorite to stay in the family so I gave it back to dad. While over seas the rifle was traded to a neighbor, I tried very hard to track it down when I got home. Never found it.

After I bought my new one I found that frequenty the gun stores in my area have original Favorites for about the same price as the new ones. That may be an option for you to consider as well. I have seen some that are quite well used, but also several others that are in good shape. If you are concerned about the new ones then an original may be your answer. If I ever find one that is near mint it will be joining my collection just for the heck of it.

I will have to round up some shorts and try it. I shot longs out of it and they seemed to work.

I have two original Favorites. One has a full octogan barrel 26" long. The other is 1/3 octogon to round 24" long. Both needed barrel relining when I got them. They are heavier than the new Mod. 30s due for the most part to the heavier barrels. The stocks on the Mod 30 is also longer. The actions are not the same and parts are not interchangable. Mine will shoot shorts, longs and long rifle but I only shoot long rifle in mine. I have been thinking of having a new barrel made up with scope mounts. I have not seen the scope mounts that are made for the Mod. 30. Both of mine are quite accurate due again I think to the heavier barrels. Very fun guns. Enjoy.
