Spartan Doubles on the way
« on: March 19, 2005, 01:49:25 AM »
For those of you who are interested , i spoke with a Remington customer service rep and he told me that the 45/70 double rifle was schedualed to distribute in LATE spring. You will be able to order them through any gunshop as most distridutors will have them like Sports South for example. He also gave me a list of stores that sell the Spartan line of firearms, they are Big-5, Garts Sports, Bimart,GI Joes,Cabelas,Gander MT., Academy, Dunhams, and Kmart.  Here in NY your lucky to find a Kmart that still carrys firearms . Well i hope this helps you i know i am going to order the .45/70 in a couple of weeks once i get the best price. I saw a place on i think guns america going to sell them for $484.00  Maybe you guys can let us know what prices you are getting and i will do the same . Later Tanoose

I would like to see one in person. If it shoots and functions well, I may replace my Ruger #1 in 45-70 with it.  :D

Redhawk if i had a ruger #1 45/70 i wouldn't replace it with any rifle. Dont forget the Spartan double rifle cant handle the loads the ruger can the spartan per Remington should stay within the saami 28000 psi. That ruger if i am correct can handle over 50000 . Hold on to it. The double rifle should be a great close range deer and black bear rifle.

Well I guess I will scratch that one off my list of guns. I want to shoot the same loads I use in my Ruger #1.  Thanks for the heads up.  :D

Went to Gander Mt. last night and inquired and they have nothing in the warehouse for this and they didn't know when they are coming, could be months this guy said.  They said they are going to sell it for 550 when they get them.  This store was in Wisconsin.

They should market these if and only if they are strong enough to handle the RUGER Level 3 50,000psi level loads.
Anything less, I'd rather have one REAL shot & a reload instead of two WEAK ones.
Double rifles have one VALID purpose; use as STOPPING rifles !
Anything short of that, they are just extra heavy !
I have no use for rifles that will not allow a CARTRIDGE to reach it's FULL potential.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

The website has a MSRP of $559.00 Lees Gun Works in Georgia shows a MSRP of $662.00 and Lees is selling them for $484.00 I would hope to pay around $420 at walmarts, I hear they make be able to get them and they weigh in at around 7 1/2 pounds.Nothing like the big 470NE doubles that weigh in around 10-11 pounds

Double rifles are not inherently heavy.  I still remember one in 9.3x74R that was so light I would be afraid of the recoil.  You need some weight to keep the recoil within reason.

Years ago used to shoot a 375 H&H bolt rifle that weighed 7 lb 4 oz.  It was a just little bit brutal with 300 grain bullets.

Cheap doubles, be they rifles or shotguns do tend to be heavier.  It's the easy way out to make a reasonably strong piece.

I am curious as to hear reports as well.  The SAMMI recommendation does not suprise me, as that is what is recommended for the Marlin and Ruger#1 by their respective companies.  With experience, we obviously have found out they can be loaded higher than the recommendation.

:( Sent Remington a note to see when the Double 45-70's are coming and was told they hope to be distributing them the 3 quarter of 2005.  What a frustrating disappointment

Oh well guess I will have to find something else to spend that money on :-D
