Author Topic: 480 Ruger Reloading (Speer or Hornady Brass?) (Read 1308 times)

I finally had to do it. I bought the Ruger SRH 7.5" in 480 Ruger Cal. Now to the reloading bench. I can find a lot of once fired brass for sale but most of it is speer, How does this brass hold up compared to Hornady? I have had issues with Speer brass in loading 45acp and 40 S&W where about 1 in 20 the bullet would be loose in the case. After running them thru a Lee Factory crimp die they would still be loose. I have never had this issue with any other brass in any Cal. I need some brass but do not want to buy something that Has a high failure rate and the price of new brass is a bit high As compared to most other Calibers.

When I reloaded for a .480 I used Hornady brass with no problems. When I first got my .480, I shot a few boxes of Hornady factory ammo. So, I just stuck with Hornady from there on out. I don't have any experience with Speer brass so I can't help you there.

i use the speer brass with a 412 grn cast bullet over h-110,shooting a taurus raging bull 6 1/2 inch i get 1150 fps at the muzzle.i've loaded these brass at least 4 times with no problem.very accurate but i do get some fouling after about 20 rounds,that has nothing to do with the brass though.

WFH, I've used about every makers brass around and only ran into your problem once when I got the wrong sizer button by mistake. MIDWAY sent me the wrong shell holder once,but that's another story. IF(big if) your brass was work hardened it might not size down correctly.It could even crack.
As for the quality of speer brass,I have had no problems using it in MY guns. Remington's QC seems to be in a slide though!

I started loading my 480 with Hornady brass--I have used the same lot of 300 rds of brass and fired over 1500 rds so far. I have not lost a case so far--primer pockets are still tight and I have only had to trim a couple of pcs of brass. My loads are mostly warm to heavy. You can't go wrong with Hornady.

I have some Hornady, and the rest is Starline. It's a dollar or so more costly, but I prefer Starline to al others.
