Learned something new again today....

I have 2 22" 45-70 barrels, they don't have the same size hole drilled in the muzzle end of the barrel for the front sight. H&R has evidently changed sight mount hole sizes sometime in the past. The newer one has a 6x48 hole, but no sights, it's got a scope on it. The other older barrel has sights, the hole for the front sight on it is only a 3 or 4x40 hole, considerably smaller than the new barrel sight mount. My idea is to have 2 45-70s for different hunting conditions, one with a peep sight, the other scoped. Because the Williams Firesight comes with a 6x48 screw, I swapped the stocks on the 2 frames and moved the sight from the old barrel to the new barrel so I wouldn't have to use the dinky little screw of the old sight on the Firesight. And put the scope on the old barrel that I didn't need iron sights on. An alternative would have been to drill and tap the old barrel to 6x48, but I don't have the tap or the drill for that size.....so I just made a swap.

Quickdtoo: i got you thinking about sights didn't I......I followed your handi JIVE talking and set me up a round......The 30-30 barrel i put different sights on had that real small treaded screw in the front sight ....The smith called new sights are all on that 30-30 barrel....can't wait to sight it in.......

No, actually I was working on the Firesight conversion about a week ago when I got the mannlicher forend, just noticed the difference in the front sight mount hole size today. I've been debating on whether to do the epoxy trick that Junior did or buy the drill and tap to change the mount hole size. This way I get my cake and can eat it too and no ha ha smith is needed to mess my rifle up as happened with my 45-120 BC....but that's another story. :cry:

Hey Quick, which aperture do you use on the front of your mannlicher 45-70?  Thanks for the pics.  I really like the looks of the Laminated stock.  Wow what a nice recoil pad, too.  Would those Williams sites work on a Tracker II or USH barrel?

The Firesight is the .375" high, .250" wide bead. The Williams shotgun shorty ramps are made for 3 different barrel widths, .690, .815 and .875, one of should them fit the shotgun barrels. The .815 fits the 45-70 barrel. The recoil pad is a Limbsaver, the best pad made as far as I'm concerned.
