Need data: 33 WCF
« on: March 04, 2005, 03:20:56 AM »
While I'm waiting for my Model 1886 to get here, hopefully next week, I'm trying to get together some loading data for 33 WCF. I have found sources for components, but data is rather scarce. My Hornady manual has data for their 200 grain FP (now discontinued). Otherwise I can't find much of anything. The Lyman cast bullet book has nothing, as do most of the manuals that I have from the various powder manufacturers.
I am especially interested in reduced power target/plinking loads, like a 200 grain lead bullet at around 1000 FPS. If anyone has any data, or know of sources, it would be appreciated.
Dave

I used to have an 1886 in 33 Win. and liked the rifle and cartridge.  I don't remember my exact load but it was IMR 3031.  Frank Barnes lists a max load of 3031 at 40 grs. and a max load of H-4895 at 45 grs.  Both data were supplied by Hornady and their 200 gr. bullet.  I didn't know Hornady had discontinued that bullet.  One could reduce either of those loads and have a pleasant shooter.  Old Western Scrounger or Buffalo Arms should have bullets.  I'm sure Buffalo Arms could provide  mold.  It's a great cartridge in a great rifle.

I have a gas check mold around here for that caliber somewhere.

Try to find some OLD reloading books some times the local library if they do not have them can get them interlibrary loan. Then photo copy them for your records.  I have 2 old lyman books and a Herters guide. None of then have any info and the oldest Lyman I have is the 42 edition so it would have to be older than that. Another problem though with really old guides is that the powder may be obsolete also. If nothing else you could try some loads with Black or Triple 7 or some other BP substitute if the loads the others posted are not satisfactory. Jim

Except that the 33 Win. was never a black powder cartridge.  It was introduced in 1902.

My Hornady 3rd Edition manual shows the following load not already posted.

Bottom load is listed at 1700 fps and top load is 2000 fps.

bottom is 1700 fps and top is 2200 fps.

Still it could be used and some folks prefer it though I leave my black and substitutes to my front stuffers. Unless the  cartridge gun was old enough that that is what you had to use I prefer smokeless. Some folks tell me they get better accuracy using black powder and substitutes but all I load for my 1902 Roller is smokeless. It was just a suggestion anyway. Jim
