Ruger Super Black Hawk vs. Redhawk
« on: February 25, 2005, 06:53:44 AM »
I have a dilemma.  I have the opportunity to purchase a 7.5 inch 44 mag Ruger.  The price is $100 less ($265) for the used (95%) SBH with an improved trigger or a new ($370)Redhawk.  What do I do????

Thanks,
Doug

I would but the wife is pregnant.  So that is not an option.

After several discussions with the very wise Graybeard I went with the new Redhawk.  As it turns out one of the distributors is having a close out on the Redhawk .44 mag with 7.5 barrel (exactly what I am looking for).  My local gin shop is selling me the Redhawk with rings for the same price as the non-ring model.

Now I need some ammo and a holster, I thinking a shoulder holster.

I have both and they are both great guns. There is no down side to your choice. Congrats on a great deal!   :D

Either one would make a great choice. Just see which one you feel more comfortable with.  :D I do not think you will regret either.

dougk, I don't see how you could go wrong on either one? Best bet would be, for the you to pick the one that suit you and the purpose of which you'ld like to own one, best.

Hey "Dirty Doug"!

I use SBHs and a good bianchi belt holster.  I'm not a big guy, only 5'7' and find shoulder rigs uncomfortable (unless it's for a snubbie up-side-down or a ppk).  I use a flap holster with half the flap cut away.  For a redhawk, I'd use a regular thumb strap holster as I do with my SWm29.

Any way you look at it......you gotta great rig!!

Enjoy,

Doug

I am thinking about putting a scope on the Redhawk.  I know I will be more accurate with it.  Any suggestions or lessons learned with using a scope or not to use a scope on the .44 Mag.

I love my Redhawk. I shoot a 7.5 inch barrel with a Leupold 2X handgun scope. I also recommend the Uncle Mikes Grip it feel great without being to big.

IMHO the Redhawk is easier to shoot. You have to option to shoot double or single action. Try both methods. If you hunt in the winter when it is cold the double action is easier nicer when using gloves. Either way you won't make a bad decision.

I get the Redhawk tomorrow.

Also, the guys at the local gun shop are great.   I told them about the sale with the distributor, they called and passed on the savings to me....
Finally, I found a Steyr S-9 that they could not bet the price on so they told me to buy it and they would handle the FFL.

If you need a small but customer service oriented Gun shop in Austin, TX let me know, I will be glad to give you their name.

I got the gun home.  Wow...

The DA and SA action is so smooth.  Much better than the Super Black Hawk and Super Redhawk.

Now do I scope or not scope it?

Oddly I had 2 coyotes chasing a deer thru the font field ths mornig.  I could have used it.

Davidson's has the blued 7.5 inch Redhawk on sale.  I understand they are out of the 7.5 with out of the 7.5 inch Redhawk with out rings.  So I got mine with the rings.

dougK,

When you get it sighted in lets us know what kind of accuracy you're getting out of it.  I have one with the Leupold scope on it and if I can get under a 2" group at 25 yds I feel lucky (and that's from a sandbagged bench rest).  I can do much better with my .357 Blackhawk with open sights.  I'm pretty dissappointed with my SRH and am really considering sending it back to Ruger.

Grunthunter,
What are you shooting for ammo? My Redhawk with the 2X Leupold shoots under 2 inches at 50 yrds without the use of sand bags. I shoot a 240gr Hornaday XTP.

Hey Guys ____ I’ve read that some of the early Redhawks were blowing the barrel shanks at the treaded portion, and later discovered that it wasn’t a design flaw but, the lubricant being used before the barrels were being screwed onto the frame.. Anyways, have any of you experience this____ THANKS BAYRUNNER.
