Rats and Racooons?

i'am new here and i don't know how to trap rats and racoons.i'am going to be trapping bush,a little bit of fields,a river and ponds.i seen a rat at a pond it was on the bank washing it's face and it lookied like it was eating.it seen me and dove straght down.sould there be a den right there in the bank i did not see any houses on the pond?Is there any rats on the river?I know where some otters are down the river and it is pritty deep there.I also seen so beaver sign on the river.There are alot of raccons there.Where do i look for racoons and rats?I will be trapping racoons and muskrats in may the ice will just be starting to be breacking up.I need to know the traps needed,sets,lure,bait,if i need boxes and etc...thanks.

I  don't care how far north you are- but if you have many coon you can't be too far north. Anyway by May coon will be 100% worthless. Even rats will be at there lowest value, if any. I suggest you wait until net season.

sorry i mean't march.if you do not think that they are any good can you still tell me how to trap them?

they should still be good at the being of march. you should get some 1 1/2 coil spring traps

Trapping coons

I trap my coons using pocket sets, cubbies, and bucket sets. Coons aren't that hard to catch. I use sardines, salmon, peanut btter, or about anyting for coon bait. A good lure also helps. I have never trapped rats but I plan to next year. I look for dens and poop on logs in the water. A #110 conibear or a #1 coil is good for rats. A #220 or a #1 1/2 coil for coons.

You got the right traps and you just need some know how.  Read up on this site and get some books and learn the basics.  You will learn more in the field by yourself that by anyone telling you anything but learning the basics will help get you started.
