Primers zinging all over the garage
« on: February 10, 2003, 02:10:09 AM »
I use a RCBS Rockchucker, and it has a little plastic tray that fits on it to collect spent primers as the brass is decapped.  Problem is that about 1 out of 4 primers will either zing across the garage when the brass is decapped, or it hits into the tray with enough force to bounce out.

I own a broom, and it does fit my hands, but has anyone devised a way to keep the primers from going all over the place?

A couple of thoughts, I have an old Reloader Special (forerunner of the Rockchucker) and I found that if it isn’t mounted to a very solid surface the extra vibration causes the decapped primers to bounce erratic, sometimes out of the catcher.

During the decapping operation the plastic primer catcher works it’s way forward causing a large gap between the inside edge of the catcher and the press letting the primers fall through.  Take a large rubber band and rap it around the catcher and the press to keep it in place.

No matter how solid the press is mounted, how tight the catcher is held to the press,,,, keep the broom handy, a few primers on the floor is the rule not the exception.

Mine did that too. I just taped an index card to the front vertical beam of the press and it stopped the problem.

I haven't had a problem with it, they just fall into the tray, it works great!  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the top for my bench weighs about 75 pounds by itself....not including the rest of the frame, it's like using a concrete bench!  It will be a pain in the butt when it's time to move though.

Mine does it too.  Annoying isn't it.  I like the card idea, it is getting to be a big enough pain I would like to do something about it.

Maybe it's time for a Co-Ax press with your lottery winnings or tax refund.
