Magnum powders in .243 ?
« on: March 09, 2005, 01:37:43 PM »
I've been looking for a powder that will push a .243 with 100 gr. bullets  to 3,000 fps with no pressure problems. I've found data showing this performance with moderate pressures from H1000 and IMR7828, both slow powders designed for large magnum cases. However, the recommended powders for the .243 are considerably faster. Is there a problem with using these very slow powders - like maybe velocity deviations and/or poor accuracy?

I loaded up some reformed military case .243 with 80 grain Winchester Magnum Rifle powder (now discontinued) with 46.0 grains (a grain and half below published max on that powders data sheet).  It shot well with no signs of excessive pressure in a 15" Encore pistol barrel.  That data sheet (kind of basic from Winchester) showed 44.7 grains with a 100 grain bullet for 3,000 fps.

My first thought and question is why do you need 3000 fps?   You're more likely to get it with a 6mm Rem or even better Weatherby .240 mag or 6mm-06.

I think you will be pushing the pressure envelope with the .243 to get 100gr bullets to 3000fps.

Like stated above, if you need that velocity, go with the 6mm or the 240mag.

That's pushing it for the .243 Winchester.

I would have to agree with pushing the 243. If you need more, buy a larger caliber to do the job you want.  :D

You can get it with Accurate Powder's Magpro and probably with Retumbo if you can find data for the latter.
