CZ 527 .204 Ruger
« on: January 25, 2005, 06:31:32 PM »
I was down at a local Gun store/firing range and saw this rifle down there.  I've been reading up a little bit on the cartridge, but I don't know much about the rifle.  I got a chance to feel the CZ 527 Single Set Trigger, which I liked very much, although I'd have to adjust the Set trigger to be a little bit harder, maybe 1.5 lb's, instead of the ounces it is at from factory.

Are the CZ 527's good guns?  I'm from a 'Shoot nothing but big bore, Remington and Ruger rifles' family, and want to varmint hunt.

I'll be shooting Coyotes at decent distances of 200-300 yards (hopefully 100 yards or closer, but the dogs around here are too weary of humans).

Anything I should watch out for on the CZ?  Any other guns that I should look at with this rifle?

CZs are about as good as it gets. Run a search on CZ 527 on this forum and you will get dozens of raves, some from me.

I'd suspect that the .204 is a bit light for 300 yard 'yotes. I'd sure check with someone with field experience before I bought one.

Is it true that you can kill a coyote at close range (25 yards) with a .22 WMR?  I feel it has enough power to, but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyways, the reason I ask that, is because according to the Ballistics report I printed out, the .204 hits at 500 yards with 465 ft/lbs of energy, while the .22 WMR at 25 yards hits with 250-260 ft/lbs of energy.

That's why I feel the .204 will be powerful enough for 'yotes at decent distances.

If it turns out that the .204 isn't up to the task, I can always get a 22-250.  I just like the lower recoil of the .204, as I'm not much for having a hurt shoulder at the end of the day.

No matter what cal. you use you need a good hit. The last time I was on a drive we got 2 and hit one that was never found. The one that got away was hit with a .30-06, but to far back. He`ll die, but even coyotes deserve a fast death if at all posible. I move up to a .204 from a .17 Rem., and I had complete confidence in the .17 Rem.

What grain shell do you shoot in your .17?

And did you say you moved up to a .204 from .17?  If so, why?

Phant0m51, I have recently bought the 527 American model, and it is rapidly becoming my "always with me" rifle. At 6-1/2 pounds, it can go everywhere, in the truck, on the 4-wheeler, and in the hand on walks. I went with the .223 because it is a better all around round, from woodchucks to coyote, and will cleanly take a deer if I want one.

I have a Remington 700 .300 Winmag for my big game.  I'm looking for strictly small - medium game.  I beleive I'm going to go with the .204, as soon as I can convince my wife that I need a small caliber rifle...

Hey guys I have had my ruger .204 for about 6 monthes.  Finally, 2 weeks I got to tried my .204 on a coyote.  Previously, I used a 22-250 for my yotes.  Here is how it went.  My first coyote, crossed under my fence at 284 yards.  I put the crosshairs right on the top of his head.  At the shot it just slung him backwards and folded him like a dirty shirt.  The wound channel in the neck about the size of a tennis ball, never flinched or knew what hit him.  The second was two days later.   This dummy and three on his pals came walking right down my road from the river.  This coyote was big!  I ranged him 308 yards.  At the shot(right in the chest facing me), he dropped and kicked about 10 seconds.  I am very impressed with that 32 grain piece of lightening.  I just have the ultralight and it groups 1/2 or 3/4 all day long.  It really is accruate!  Now, I just have to wait for a few more of his buddies to come back.  Think they can read a welcome sign(or enter at your own risk)?

CZ does make a good gun.  I wouldn't say that they are the best, but very good for the money.  They are accurate and have descent triggers.  Expect half inch and under groups.  The 204 is good dog medicine, but I have found that the 40 grainers work better for these bigger critters.  Plus they group better.

Come on now Phantom, don't tell me that a 22-250 is going to burn up your shoulder!

I've been looking at both the .204 and the 22-250 and now am leaning toward the .204.  Suprisingly ballistically superior, but I can't believe that the recoil is that much different.  But then again I think my 300 RUM is a decent shooter.
