More Hani questions
« on: March 11, 2005, 06:00:46 AM »
The more I read about this gun, the more intrigued I am.  But, before I go out and buy one, I have a few questions.  To help with the questions, I am looking for a 22-250 or 223 for varmit/predator hunting.

1.) What is the difference between the Handi Rifle and the Ultra Varmit?  I assume some type of accuracy addition to the ultra.

2.) Are there any models that I should try to stay away from?

3.) What is the process of ordering extra barrels?  Do the extra barrels drop in or do they need gunsmith work.  I have heard barrels can be had for less than $100.  Compared to the contender barrels, this is great.

4.) Does anyone see any problems with ordering one in 223 or 22-250 and then buying a 22 mag barrel for after dark fox hunting?

Thanks
TH

The Handis come with synthetic or plain wood stocks, some with a plain laminated wood. The Ultras have resin laminated or the new fluted Ultra have a partial skeltonized stock, also, they have a longer scope rail with support on the over hang which is nice when mounting longer scopes.

The super light barrels have a hot/cold history, some shoot excellent, others don't. Not an issue if you get the .223, it's got an excellent track record with few exceptions. The 22-250 is a new again caliber, not many out there yet to tell.

Accessory barrels will cost $110-$135, most around $110 after all shipping is paid, you send your frame in minus the barrel, they fit the barrel and return a complete gun to you. Some choose to remove the butt stock to save weight and keep it from being damaged.

The rimfire barrels can't be fired on a centerfire frame and vise-versa, the firing pin location is different and the rimfire frames are not strong enough even if pin location were different. Rimfire and shotgun frames are designated as SS1 and SB1, centerfire rifle frames as SB2, SB2 frames are heat treated to stand the much high pressures of the non-magnum rifle calibers.  You would need to buy a Sportster in the caliber of choice, which isn't much more than a fitted acc barrel which run $94-$98, a complete Sportster can be bought for $104 from Walmart, an Ultra 22mag for $134.

Let me tell you what I know.  I'm sure one of the more advanced members will chime in if I get it wrong....

The Ultra varmint comes with 24in bull barrel and a laminated stock.  The bull barrel handi in 223 or 243 is 22in and has the "pallet-wood" standard stock.

I think the general consensus is that all the Handi's are great.  You need to pick the configuration that suits your needs and style.

The barrel accessory program requires you to ship your frame with stock and forend into H&R's facility in Mass..  They fit each barrel to your specific frame and send it back to you.  You can pick up barrels independently; guys here are often selling barrels back and forth.  It is possible to fit your own barrel with tips that are recorded on other threads here, but you should be good at that sort of thing if you going to do it on your own.

As the the 22Mag, there a problem.  The way Handi's are configured, the firing pin position won't match up with a rimfire barrel.  You need a Sportster (rimfire) frame for the rimfire (22, 22 Mag, 17HMR, 17M2) barrels.  The other frame issue works in your favor if you buy a rifle frame.  H&R/NEF will mount shotgun barrels or muzzleloader barrels to rifle frames (in general), but shotgun frames can only be used with shotgun and muzzleloader barrels.
