If you could only have 1? 30-30 or 45-70
« Reply #30 on: March 05, 2005, 09:47:41 PM »
I have both. I like my 30-30, but I love the 45-70. The 30-30 has plenty of juice for deer and I have a 3-9x40 scope shooting 150 coreloks. Dead on the money at 100yds.
As far as the 45-70, I don't have a scope on it because I will use it for any game ( bear, boar, and deer) and it's sighted in at 50 yds. It's shooting 5/8 inch high at 50 yds. And I will use it inside the treeline. It's sighted in with the 300 coreloks. If I decide to hunt bear or boar, then I will go with the 405 gr. coreloks.    Decision is I would opt for the 30-30. Ammo is cheap, and a well placed shot with the 170 coreloks will suffice. But start putting some money away when you can and then get a 45-70 barrel. As Hellacatcher says " It's a hoot to shoot" :toast:  :biggun:

Hands down, NO question, go with the 45-70.
The 30-30 is a PIP-SQUEAK of a centerfire rifle cartridge.
Yeah, it may have survived for over 100 years, but I for one see NO reason why it does, other than the fact that it is available in the Winchester 94.
The 45-70 when PROPERLY handloaded is equal to the muzzle energy of a 375 H&H magnum; REAL bone-smashin' horsepower !
The 45-70 can be shot in the WEAK factory Rem/Win form which has very LITTLE recoil, although I have NO use for such loads other than putting holes in paper targets.
Recoil of the "magnum" 45-70 PROPER handloads ?
HEAVY, but that just lets you know you are touchin' off something WORTHWHILE !

Dump the 30-30 idea & buy the REAL caliber, the 45-70 !
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

The reason the 30-30 HAS lasted over 100 years,is because it is a great cartridge...and has accounted for more heads of big  game taken...than probably any other cartridge on the market... standard or  magnum cartridges...it is a real cartridge ...and has withstood the onslaught of every other wizbang cartridge brought out since it's inception.Magnum cartridges have their place as well...but...while the new ones burst on the market in a blaze of glory...they also die on the vine withered and unused...and unneeded...while the ole 30-30 keeps trudging along...there will always be a market for a gentle mild mannered deer cartridge...not so with large magnums...

From your subsequent post, it appears you are considering reloading.  If that is the case, I change my recommendation to the 45-70.

It was suggested earlier by Nighttrain ...that the obvious had been overlooked in not choosing the 30-06...and the more I think about it...the more I am inclined to agree...while the 30-30 is a great deer cartridge. it is very easy on the shoulder...and on the wallet.....and the 45-70 can be had with some pretty awsome loads....the 30-06 would bridge the gap quite nicely. for the one rifle person....and the 30-06 ammo can be had with some superior ammo as well...granted not as cheap as your typical 30-30 deer loads...but the better 45-70 ammo isn't as cheap as it either...I have used and owned all 3 cartridges...each have their strenghts and weaknesses...even taking reloading into the equation........
It's very difficult to say which is going to serve you better...without knowing a few other things...do you own any other type of firearm that can be used for brear protection?...You stated...

It will be used for deer hunting and havin' fun at the range. It  may  encounter some duty on camping in the Colorado Rockies

IF you don't  have anyother firearm for bear protection...other than a single shot your wanting to pick up...then I suggest you either not go camping where bears are present...or get a different gun all together...if your funds will allow it...as much as I like my Handi's...  a single shot would not be my first choice going into bear country to camp..granted you may never encounter one...but if you do...and it turns ugly...you may want more than your single shot at your disposal .....

To answer a few of you.
Presently, I have only my 12ga Pardner with 24inMod and Tracker II barrels.  I have had the same thoughts on the 30.06 and I only recently came to know anything about the 45-70 and got Hooked.  As far as the 30-30 goes, WHO HASN'T HEARD OF THE 30-30 LEVER ACTION RIFLE!  The TDC 20ga is my prioriy at this time, but I still want/need?, a Handi as well.  You know, for balance. LOL

That all said, thanks for all the input!  You have all given me lots of info to make a good choice.  One thing for sure, I won't be able to stop at just one.  But you guys already know that.

Thanks

My question, like Nighttrain52 asked why only the 30-30 or the 45-70?  You are really limiting yourself with those two for close work only.  They are both great short range deer guns.  The 45-70 can also be used for something heavier like bears and hogs but at close ranges only.  The 30-06 can do anything the 30-30 can do, only better, and reach out and do a lot more.  It has range over both and velocity over both.  Granted it does not hit as hard as the 45-70 at close range, and does not have the penatration, but it isn't that far behind.  And a 30-06 cost no more than a 30-30 or 45-70 Handi.

I had always it would be great to have a 30-06.  In the areas where I would hunt deer the '06 just would not be a good choice.  I would never be takin' shots that long.  I need a good brush gun and the 30-30 and 45-70 both could fill that order.  However, I must confess, I wouldn't mind owning a 30-06, too.  There certainly is no shortage of types of bullets to reload with.  Thanks for more food for thought.

DON"T BUY A .30-06 , Its probably one of the most versatile rounds ever chambered in anything. If you get a 06 you won't have any reason to buy anything else. This is never a good thing for a handi addict. Otherwise get a .223 and start working your way up.

Bob may have been joking, but what he is saying is absolutely true!  I made the mistake of buying a .280 Handi for an elk hunt...  The reason why it was a mistake is that the .280 is a "do-it-all" cartridge.  It is a great pronghorn and deer cartridge; it dropped the 6x6 bull elk in its tracks.  It is real hard to justify to the wife the need for more rifles... :(

I did a job a few years ago where i had the option of saving my per diem by camping on site. I was getting as much per diem as i was getting paid and though there were no bears, a local would let his cattle graze in our general area and he had one mean looking bull. I would drain my cooler into milk jugs (about half full) and whenever a cow started licking the dew off my tent (risking guy lines being pulled up when cow trips over them) i would go out and throw a jug at it. Woke up one night to the sound and threw jug out tent at sound of culprit. I heard a rush of feet, sudden stop, and a snort. The bull just sort of stared for a while and left, but my next purchase was a Mossberg 590 and some 1 5/8oz brennekes and some #4 buck for possible 'yotes. I had put one of those high intensity lights on it and slept better....Some time later, my first Handi Rifle was a 45-70. Now I have a small-bore barrel (.270, for 'yotes and longer ranges) and a 20 bore USH barrel that i treat like a bore rifle with Rocky Mountain Cartridge turned brass and black shooting paper-patched 900 grain cast bullets. Now there is some love for the shoulder.

45LCshooter
I went on their web site and saw the brass and the instuctions for loading shot.  I don't under stand about the 900 grain bullet and the black paper patch.  What holds the bullet in?  Are you using 2 3/4 or 3 in. brass?  Also, how about a ballistic comparison for this set up compared to regular store bought slugs or the 45-70.  PICTURES I UNDERSTAND.  I'm new at this so please keep it simple for me.
Thanks

What is this crazy talk of only one :-D  the only one thing about a handi is the single shot.  You can't just own one,  Now if you change your question to where to start either one is good, because in my thinking the best bear medicine is a clean camp site, because where I live unless there are claw marks on your butt you'll be in trouble.
