Opinions Please Ultra Rifle Owners
« on: March 09, 2005, 08:34:52 AM »
I am thinking of buying a new H&R Ultra Rifle for deer hunting and use by my wife or me.
I have been thinking of the .243 heavy barrel or the 25-06.
I have heard that the 243 handis don't shoot the heavier bullets well, and I dont really know that much about the 25-06 caliber.

  Opinions and observations needed.

 Thanks in advance

I've got both, the 25-06 is the better deer caliber, but with the right bullet, the 243 will work fine. My 243 shoots the 100gr rem corlokts real well but the Federal 100gr Power Shok shoots best, most find that the 85-95gr bullets shoot best, it's just a matter of finding the right combination that works. My 25-06 is real accurate with the 115gr Federal NP and the 117gr Hornady BTSP, shooting sub moa 100yd 3-shot groups. The Ultras are a bit heavier with the resin laminated stock, will reduce recoil but make for a heavier carry rifle. Recoil for the 243 is probably not an issue but the 25-06 may be uncomfortable for the Mrs.

I am with quick on this, unless recoil is an issue I would go 25-06. With my limited experience with my 243 ultra 243(1 season 1 deer) , it is an OK but just barely Ok, deer round, where as the 25-06 classifies as fabulous (a friend has one) especially in the open country we hunt.

I have a 243 I bought for exwife. I also have a 25/06 I'd say go with the 25/06 it is louder but when deer hunting you'll never notice the difference. It also makes a heck of a long range coyote gun with 75 grain V-Max, that is if your not too worried about hides , can be a little messy especially on the closer shots . But heck you won't have to skin 'em it does it for ya. LOL
