Could someone help me out identify which Savage 24
« on: March 08, 2005, 12:49:23 PM »
Hello, I have recieved a savage 24, the button to break the gun open is right in front of the trigger guard...the barrel selector is on the hammer, it has a .22lr barrel on top and a .20 ga. barrel on bottom, the wood is very dark, very few scratches, the trigger guard is broken where the second screw goes into the wood but there is a washer holding it in place, the blueing is very good and it has a dovetail grove in the barrel for a scope but it has open sights also, could someone tell me which model i have,  i have never seen one like this with the release button in the front of the gaurd and could someone tell me about how much this drillings is worth?

What you have is a Savage 24, either Series 'R', or more likely, Series 'S'.  It should be so marked somewhere on the barrels, near the receiver. The wood is hardwood, birch, and it is the standard model, not the deluxe, the deluxe version in that time period had walnut wood, skip line checkering, and the 10 1/2 inch beavertail forend. The action break on the rimfires went to the front of the triggerguard in 1980, until 1989, when Savage discontinued the wood stocked models, and went to the 24F, with the ugly black composite stocks. So your gun was manufactured between 1980 & 1989. Can't tell you what it's worth, because of the triggerguard, thats a big minus, as it's hard to find parts for the older Savages, but if the trigger guard wasn't broken, and the gun was in pristine condition, I would think you could get 325 to 350 for it on auction, I've seen them go for that much. Also, while being a 22LR on top rather than a 22 Mag, should make it worth more, as theoretically, more 22 mags were sold than 22 LR's, it doesn't seem to work that way, buyers do prefer the 22 Win Mag. If you want to sell it, your best bet would be to watch what they are going for on Auction Arms & Gunbroker, then set your price accordingly.
Sincerely,
