Drifting BC front sight
« on: March 11, 2005, 12:27:35 PM »
What's the best way to drift out the front sight of a BC? Is there a jig I can use to prevent damaging the barrel or should I just use a vice? I want to change the factory sight to a windgage adjustable post.

Thanks,
Dave

I just use a brass drift, support the muzzle on its side on a solid surface, place the drift against the dovetail base and tap it out with a light hammer. I bought a sight drift from Track of the Wolf for $4, it's solid brass with a round knurled 3/8" end approx 2½" long, with a flat ¾" long end section that is the thickness of a dovetail base, it works excellent because it doesn't touch the globe in the Lyman 17A sight. My EX-gunsmith ruined the sight on my BC when he removed it to do the lathe work for the rechamber to 45-120, it took him another week after the barrel was finished for him to replace the sight....I've knocked that one out, put it back in, then knocked it out again and replaced it with a lower globe sight and still haven't damaged a hood on the globe sight.

Yup, he scored the finish on the barrel in front of the rear 2 mount holes when he did the lathe work and he ruined the front sight when he knocked it out before the lathe work. He didn't have much of an explanation for it other that he said it happens.....it just won't happen to me again at his shop....he used to be real good, but he's in his 70s, has hired some help, someone or he doesn't seem to do quality work anymore....the chamber looks great, but the scoring of the barrel and him touching it up was unacceptable to me. I was afraid to leave it with to fix for fear that he would take his sweet time fixing it and that he'd bugger up something else! So I cut my losses and refinished it myself....gettin good at cold blueing, too!! He also put the front sight in a bit crooked so there was daylight under the back edge of the dovetail, took about 5 minutes for me to fix it, sloppy work on his part!

Once it gets to the point you think the whole barrel needs to be reblued you can't beat the offer H&R has to reblue or re case-color recievers or reblue barrels, $10 to $15 each!!!! I am thinking of saving shipping costs and sending them 4-5 recievers and barrels to do all at once!!! Drop a $100 or so and have some great guns. I understand if you send in a Sportster frame with the matte blue finish it comes back polished and a bright blue similar to the Handirifle frames, much better and nicer looking in my estimation. I had contemplated polishing at least the Sportster recievers myself before I sent them in but it looks as if I will not have to!!! I may try to highly polish one reciever to see if it comes back looking better than the rest anyway....<><....

Do you think they would blue my barrel since it's been rechambered to 45-120? I'm sure it is no longer warranted, but reblueing is different I would hope....I suppose they might not even notice, unless they test fire em after doing the bluing....that's not a nice thought.

Well I'm pretty sure they don't test fire it to reblue it, but they do read these pages( ). Even if they did test fire it, wouldn't a 45-70 shoot just fine out of your 45-120?. Anyway it's a moot point, your not sending your barrel in for warrenty work, your sending it in to be reblued, and your paying what they ask for the reblueing, so the warranty has nothing to do with it!!! Let me know how the reblue comes out!!!....<><....

All the Factory Refinishing costs are listed in the Retail Parts Catalog Price List....
Reblue barrel-------------------------------------$10.00
Refinish Rifle Frame,Blue------------------------$20.00
Refinish Baystate,Color Case Hardening----$15.00
Shipping&Handling-------------------------------$10.00

It looks to me as if your barrel would be $20.00 reblued with the return shipping

Even if they charge more for the BC barrel due to its longer length, it's still a great buy if those prices are still good, which brings me to the next question....is that a 2005 price list you have? I don't have a new one yet.

Thanks,

Tim
