What color are the Handi-rifle receivers?
« on: March 15, 2005, 02:12:50 PM »
I have an older NEF 20 guage shotgun and its receiver is a multicolored blue. It looks like the colors of spilled oil or gas on tar.

I have seen pictures of the new Handi rifles that have an almost black receiver.

Are the receivers now black? Does it change due to what type of rifle/shotgun you order?

Anyone have pictures for compairison?

The Pardner shotgun frame is color case treated as well as the Buffalo Classic, but the shotgun frame is an SB1 frame, the BC is an SB2 frame. The flat black frames are usually Sportster rimfire frames. The blued frames can probably be either SBI or SB2 depending on when it was made and for what model it was originally made. For instance the 22 mag Ultra has a blued frame but it's an SB1 rimfire frame. These are general guidelines, I'm sure there are exceptions. The best way of knowing what frame you have is to check with H&R, they will tell you what barrels can be fitted by the serial number.

Ridge Runner,

I believe both SB1s and SB2 frames are also available in nickel finish as well. SB1s = Topper, Topper Classic,  TDC, Stainless Huntsman & Stainless Sidecick;  SB2s = Stainless Handi-Rifles.

I think many of the older (pre 1987) SB1s were case hardened as well.  Case hardening produces that multi-colored marble looking finish that you have on your shotgun.

You can log on to www.hr1871.com to see the different finishes.

My first modern Handi was an SB2 .270 with synthetic stock.  It had a flat "blue" finish.  Sort of a parkerized look.  Latter bought a regular SB2 Handi 30-30 that had a highly polished blue finish.  My older H&R 058 30-30 has the color case hardened finish.
